~ Advance eliminated Chaffee with a 59-58 victory in consolation play.

Advance sophomore reserve Matt Ware grabbed an offensive rebound and banked it in with just seconds to go to give the Hornets a 59-58 victory over the Chaffee Red Devils in the consolation quarterfinals of the Southeast Missourian Christmas Tournament on Thursday at the Show Me Center.

The Hornets led 10-6 early in the first quarter but did not take the lead again until Ware scored to begin the forth quarter.

Chaffee got a big game from senior Jerod Steger, whose 22 points was a game high, but was unable to convert at the free-throw line, making just 12 of 22 attempts during the game.

The Red Devils led 58-54 with 1:12 to go after Andy Hendrix made the second of two free throws. Jacob Bond then hit a 3-pointer to pull Advance within one point. Bond hit three 3-pointers during the game and finished with 18 points.

After a timeout by Advance coach Joe Shoemaker, the Hornets stole the inbound pass but were unable to convert on multiple attempts at the basket. Eventually, Chaffee recovered the ball and called a timeout. However, a traveling violation gave the ball back to Advance and led to the game-winning shot by Ware.

Chaffee still had a chance to win the game, but Jerod Steger's 3-point attempt fell off the rim.

Ware scored all 11 of his points in the second half. David VanGennip added 13 points for Advance, which picked up its first win in seven games.

Andy Hendrix netted 14 points for Chaffee, which fell to 4-4.

Advance will face Delta today in the consolation semifinals.
