A pair of factors could mean a record number of boaters on the water for the Fourth of July holiday.
Ruth Wood of the Boat U.S. Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water said the events of Sept. 11 could mean more boaters on the water to observe fireworks displays, and because the holiday is on Thursday, it could result in more four-day weekend vacations for many boaters.
"Everyone needs to make extra effort to stay alert, safe, and yet still have fun," Wood said.
Among her tips for boaters:
Be sure boats are operating with a fully functioning electrical system and running lights.
Avoid what are usually short cuts on the water, because they'll be congested over the holiday.
Designate a passenger to watch for approaching boats without running lights.
