KENNETT – The Holcomb Education Foundation hosted its seventh annual golf tournament at the Kennett Country Club on Friday, July 14, 2023.
The annual tournament raises funds that directly benefit Holcomb R-III School District classrooms, K-12. This year, the Holcomb Education Foundation – a non profit organization which is not directly affiliated with the school district – was able to raise around $22,000, and foundation treasurer Sarah Jo Morgan estimates that they will net between $19,000 and $20,000.
“It went really well,” Morgan said. “We ended up with 14 teams, and we were really pleased with that. Everybody seemed to have a really good time.”
Morgan explained that district teachers and staff members submit grants each year to request items that would be beneficial to the classroom and learning experience. Commonly, many of the requests are for items that the district would not otherwise be able to budget for.
“There is no budget,” Morgan said. “The school itself has no budget for these kind of things, so anything we are able to do is totally extra. A lot of teachers will request things that supplement what they are teaching, and everything is so expensive. That’s where we are and what we try to help with.”
In past years, with funds raised from the golf tournament and another fundraiser selling memorial tiles which adorn the outside of the school building, the foundation has been able to provide Holcomb students with valuable learning tools like SMART Boards, iPads, a 3D printer, scientific calculators and various online learning subscriptions.
Prior to last year, the tournament averaged around a $12,000 profit. After last summer, the funds raised were able to pay for things like preschool playground equipment and shaded canopies, alternative seating for lower grades, classroom touch screen monitors and trips for junior high and high school history classes, including a trip to the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis.
“We had more sponsors this year, which was great,” Morgan said. “We picked up a couple of new ones, and we’re very grateful for those.”
“We want to benefit preschool through twelfth grade,” she continued. “They need bigger things, and we encourage our teachers to just see what they might need.”
The tournament is held every summer for all community members who want to participate and is not limited to KCC members or those involved in Holcomb schools. For those who don’t play golf, there are more opportunities to support the cause, like sponsoring holes and participating in the various other games held during the event.
