JACKSON, Mo. -- Cape Central's Arthur Pilsner netted an unassisted goal with one minute left in regulation Thursday to tie Jackson at 2-2.
That would prove to be the final score as neither team could find the net in two five-minute overtime periods.
The evenly matched, well-played contest between the two archrivals left Jackson's record at 13-4-2 and Cape Central's at 11-7-3.
Despite the tie, Jackson coach Zach Walton felt his team played well and proved something to themselves.
"I really wanted these kids to realize that we had a big loss (8-0) at the beginning of the season to them and we just wanted to come out and prove that we could play with these guys."
The Indians jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first half on a penalty kick by Pat Kohm.
The Tigers' Matt Davis countered with a 20-yard boot into the right side of the net off an assist by Cody Hill to knot the score at 1-1.
In the second half, Jackson utilized a nice passing game to set up a Greg Schwab goal which gave the Indians a 2-1 lead with about 10 minutes to go. Matt Gordon got the assist.
The way the Indian defense was playing, it appeared to be enough to ensure victory.
"I felt like we had the game won, but we let it slip away in the last minute," said Walton.
Pilsner's last minute goal was the result of a strategic gamble by Cape Central coach Tom Doyle.
"With about eight minutes to go I told my sweeper (Pilsner) to move up and get involved in the offense," said Doyle. "He normally plays back, but at that point it doesn't matter if you lose 2-1 or 5-1. We needed a goal. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't and the other team scores. Tonight it paid off for us."
The two teams will most likely meet again as the No. 1 and 2 seeds in the district playoffs which begin on Oct. 28.
"We're in the driver's seat for the No. 1 seed in our district," said Doyle. "You don't want to lose to a team in your district."
Cape Central's JV team (12-1) won 1-0 in a match shortened by darkness. Heath Orr got the goal on an assist by Calen Wills.
