ORAN, Mo. -- Scott City High's boys basketball team trailed for all but 14 seconds of Friday night's game against host Oran.
But that was still enough to lift the Rams to an exciting 63-61 victory. Scott City is now 3-1 while Oran fell to 2-2.
"We got outplayed for three quarters tonight, there's no doubt about it," said Scott City coach Derek McCord. "Oran should be congratulated on a fine effort. They're going to beat a lot of teams this year. They came out ready to play and it took us a while to get going.
"But our senior leadership stepped up late in the game. Nick Steimle and Ben Sample both hit some big free throws. This is a good win for us. To go on the road for the first time (this season), we can learn a lot from this game."
Steimle gave the Rams, who trailed by 11 points in the third quarter, their first lead of the night when he made two free throws with 14 seconds left, putting Scott City ahead 62-61.
Steimle then blocked an Oran shot and Sample was fouled with five seconds remaining. He made one of two free throws for a 63-61 lead, then Sample came up with a steal to seal the victory.
Steimle led the Rams offensively with 20 points and he also pulled down 13 rebounds. Ben Sample scored 17 while Michael O'Brien had 11 and Ricky Keller added 10.
"Michael O'Brien came up huge off the bench for us," McCord said.
Oran got 12 points from both Nathan Seyer and Adam Friga. Patrick Friga had 10.
The Eagles held a 13-11 lead after one quarter and pushed their advantage to 38-32 by halftime. They then built an 11-point third-period lead, but the Rams pulled to within 53-46 by the end of the quarter and then rallied in the final period.
Scott City's junior varsity won 58-53 behind 24 points from Tyler Ward, who hit all 11 of his field-goal attempts and both of his free throws.
