Two innings don't usually shape a ball game.
But Sikeston pitcher Gavin O'Brien made sure his team's outburst held up.
Sikeston piled on its rival from the north for six runs in the second inning and let O'Brien close the door during its 8-1 win over Notre Dame Tuesday at Notre Dame High School.
"We definitely wanted the win," O'Brien said. "We know we're capable of playing good baseball and to do it against a good team like Notre Dame is even better."
Sikeston (9-7) is now 4-2 in conference play and was named the fourth seed in the upcoming SEMO Conference tournament.
"We put together, what I think, probably our best game of the season," Sikeston coach Alan Scheeter said. "To play that way against Notre Dame, especially on their field, makes you feel good."
Scheeter holds a 3-4 record against Notre Dame since he took over as coach in 2012. This was just Notre Dame's second loss of the season bringing its record to 16-2.
"We've got to finish," Notre Dame coach Jeff Graviett said. "They gave us opportunities to score in the first and we couldn't find a way to score. After that it was the Gavin O'Brien show."
Ross James took the loss on the mound for Notre Dame.
