The Saxony Lutheran girls soccer team did not allow a shot on goal in a 5-0 road victory Monday night against Poplar Bluff.
Grace Mirly and Ashlynn Collier staked the Crusaders (5-0) to a 2-0 lead at halftime, and Saxony struck for two more goals early in the second half.
"So far, so good other than it being cold about every game," Saxony Lutheran coach Ryan Schweain said. "I think we're kind of gelling pretty well with each other. I thought tonight we played well."
Brianna Mueller and Tess Daniel scored in the first five minutes of the second half, and Maci Daniel added a late goal.
Both teams were equipped with head bands over their ears and leggings under their shorts with temperatures in the 30s and the wind chill in the high 20s. A band of snow flurries came across the field about midway through the second half.
Schweain felt his girls handled the elements well.
"Once they were on the field it seemed like they did all right," Schweain said. "The ones on the bench, they were freezing."
As for himself?
"The eight years I've been out here, this is the coldest game on I remember," Schweain said. "My feet are hurting."
