GIDEON — Both the Risco and Cooter High School volleyball teams advanced to Saturday’s championship round after having success at the Gideon Tournament Thursday.

Winona and Eminence also advanced, and both of those teams were tops in their pools.

Risco was second in Pool 4, defeating Hayti 25-6, 25-16 and Charleston 25-12, 25-13, but falling to Eminence 25-16, 25-17. The Tigers stand at 13-7.

Cooter knocked off Campbell 25-16, 25-24 and split with Southland, 25-21, 22-25, to advance out of Pool 3. Campbell defeated Southland 25-21, 25-18.

The Wildcats improved to 6-7-1, while Campbell now stands at 5-10-2 and Southland is 6-9-2.

The remainder of the field will be filled up with the first- and second-place teams from Pool 1 and Pool 2 Friday evening.

Matches begin Saturday at 11 a.m., with the semifinals at 1 p.m., and championship and third-place contests at 2 p.m.

Cross Country: Kennett boys 2nd

VAN BUREN — Kennett High School cross country runners Dylan Yates and Kade Anderson both earned top-10 finishes, and the Indians took second as a team at the Scenic River Run Wednesday.

“As a team, it was our race,” Kennett head coach Don Franklin said. “We feel like Dylan is maturing as a runner, and expect that to really start showing up in his times.”

Yates was third overall, clocking in at 19:33, with Anderson sixth (20:22.2).

At this meet, runners were split into two different groups — Classes 3-5 and Classes 1-2. The Indians were grouped in Classes 3-5.

Other finishers were Gabriel Checkett (16th), Blaine Roberts (17th), Tanner Hansen (21st) and Cash Franklin (24th).

The Indians scored 42 points for second place behind Poplar Bluff.

“Most importantly, they aren’t satisfied,” Franklin added. “I think this race showed them they can compete with anyone and it’s motivated them at a great time of the year.”

Senath-Hornersville competed in the Classes 1-2 division, with Gerardo Castillo turning in a 25th place finish (19:08.9) and Ricardo Gonzalez 36th as the Lions finished seventh out of nine schools.

Todd Green was 39th, Adyn Goff 45th, Mason Williams 46th, Alejandro Soto 68th, Jacob Chapman 70th, Logan Beard 79th, Adam Motes 87th, Luke Rushing 89th, Angel Ledezma 92nd and Grant Burr 94th.

Chloe Edmonston and Halle Jamerson placed 24th and 25th with respective times of 24:59.8 and 25:02. Lily Chandler was next for the Lions in 27th, Tanya Martinez 46th, Hayley Barksdale 51st, Ava Bollinger 52nd, Jena Dogan 56th, Ailani Arenas 63rd, Gabriela Sierra 64th and Emma Sample 66th.

There are two cross country meets of note in the area next week: Ellington on Wednesday and Cape Notre Dame Regional in Cape Girardeau on Saturday.

Soccer: Indians add home-and-home series

The Kennett High School soccer team has added a home-and-home series with Westwood Baptist, a private school based in Poplar Bluff.

The Indians will square off with Westwood Baptist at 5 p.m., on Monday, Oct. 2, at Indian Park. This means Kennett now will have three home games this season.

Kennett faces Westwood Baptist at Poplar Bluff on Tuesday, Oct. 17, with first kick slated for 5 p.m.
