After jumping out to a three-run lead Thursday, the Central baseball team gave it right back.

A pair of errors on ground balls allowed Poplar Bluff to pull even before the Mules slugged past the visiting Tigers 10-5 in a SEMO Conference game.

"We just didn't play well enough," Central coach Steve Williams said. "We didn't put enough balls in play."

Central (2-3, 1-2 SEMO) scored three runs in the first inning but managed just two hits the rest of the way.

A two-out error allowed Poplar Bluff to score twice in the bottom of the first. Another error in the second allowed the Mules to tie the game.

Poplar Bluff (5-0, 3-0) took the lead on a misplayed bunt later in the second before going up 5-3 on a wild pitch.

"They swung the bats well enough today," Williams said. "They put it in play. That puts pressure on the defense, and in high school baseball, usually somebody is going to make a mistake."

The Mules struck out just once and had five extra-base hits.

Central jumped ahead in the first when Christian Cavaness led off with a walk and Luke Hinkebein followed with a single. Ryan Siebert's one-out sacrifice fly put the Tigers on the board, and Thomas Crocetti followed with a double to the left-field gap. Matt Chism then singled in Crocetti for a 3-0 lead.

The Tigers put the ball in play just twice after that against lefty Wesley Pyles. The sophomore struck out the next four and nine total over four innings.

"Once he got past that first inning, he was lights out," Poplar Bluff coach Stan Bullington said.

A leadoff double in the third by Hinkebein led to a run when he moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Ramsey Scott's sacrifice fly.

The Mules turned a double play in the sixth, but Crocetti doubled down the left-field line and later scored on a single by Vance Toole. That cut the margin to 9-5, but Poplar Bluff got a big defensive play for the first out of the seventh.

Shortstop Lucas Tibbs made a sliding catch on a bloop hit to shallow left, and reliever Charlie Kayser pitched around a pair of walks with two of his five strikeouts.

Central fanned 14 times in all.

"Right now we're really struggling as a group, especially with two strikes," Williams said. "We've got to put it in play more often.

"If you let a team strike [you] out almost half of your outs, you're not going to win."
