Perryville's season came to an end in heartbreaking fashion Tuesday.
Sikeston hit the game-winning shot with about 3 seconds left to pull out the 51-50 win in its Class 4 District 1 girls basketball opener at Dexter.
"We had the ball out of bounds with a one-point lead with about 17 seconds left," Perryville coach Vicki Lohmann said. "We got the ball in bounds and we shot it. We missed the shot and they came down and hit the last-second shot with about 3 seconds left and made the basket and won the game.
"We called the timeout [with 17 seconds left] and I said all you've got to do is get it in bounds. They're going to come after us, don't shoot it."
Keyonna Blissett hit the game-winning layup to cap Sikeston's comeback after Perryville began the fourth quarter with a nine-point lead.
"We forced up shots," Lohmann said about the fourth quarter.
Natalie Bauwens led the Pirates with 20 points and 20 rebounds, while Emily Hanquist added 16 points.
