The Perryville volleyball team claimed the title of its own tournament for the first time, sweeping St. Pius 25-21, 25-21 in the gold bracket championship match Saturday night.
The Pirates went 7-0-1 in the 20-team event, which advanced the top two teams from each of the five pools into the gold bracket.
Perryville defeated St. Vincent 25-17, 25-22 in the first round, then reached the title match with a 25-15, 25-17 victory over Park Hills in the semifinals.
St. Pius advanced to the championship with a win over Bismarck. Saxony Lutheran went 3-0-1 in pool play to advance to the gold bracket, where it lost to Park Hills in three games.
Gateway City Classic
Notre Dame finished with one tie and two losses at the Gateway City Classic in St. Louis over the weekend.
The Bulldogs battled Granite City to a 0-0 tie and suffered a pair of 3-2 losses to O'Fallon and Collinsville.
Devin Ziegler scored both goals against O'Fallon. Ben Dohogne and Ira Holcomb both finished with an assist. Ziegler and Brock Hammers both scored goals in the game against Collinsvile. Jake Powderly recorded an assist.
Chile Pepper Festival
Jackson finished 15th in both the boys and girls races at the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Ark.
Chelsea Drum, a sophomore, led the Indians with a 10th-place finish in 19 minutes, 46.3 seconds. Gabe Underwood was the top finisher for the boys, placing 31st in 16:56.8.
