The Notre Dame boys cross country team finished second and the girls team took third in the season-opening First to the Finish Kickoff Classic on Saturday at SIU-Edwardsville in Edwardsville, Illinois.
Junior Rudy McClellan had the best individual finish for the Bulldogs with a third-place time of 16 minutes, 56 seconds in the boys race. Matt Gibbs finished eighth in 17:30.
Alaina Baumgart finished seventh in the girls race with a time of 20:11 and teammate Katie Hanners was right behind her at 20:14 to take eighth.
The Saxony Lutheran girls team finished in 17th place while the boys team took 19th. The Chaffee girls were 20th in the team standings.

Notre Dame sophomores Allison Bray and Sarah Bell faced off in a sudden-death playoff after tying for medalist honors at 76 at the Massac County Invitational at Metropolis Country Club in Illinois. Bray made a par-4 on the first hole of the playoff for the top spot, and the Bulldogs girls golf team finished second in the seven-team invitational on Saturday.
Massac County scored a 341 while Notre Dame came up just short of the title with a 342.
