The Notre Dame Bulldogs posted a 2-0 shutout over Poplar Bluff on Tuesday in what was their final home game for both their season and longtime coach Brad Wittenborn.
"I told my team after the game that this is probably my last home game," said Wittenborn, who has led the program to three state titles during his 22 seasons as coach of the Bulldogs. "We have a couple of fine young coaches here and it's time they take the reins."
Luke Mocherman and Benjamin Parsons ensured the final home game would be a success with second-half goals. Parsons assisted on Mocherman's goal about two minutes into the second half, while Mocherman returned the favor about 20 minutes later.
Thomas Himmelberg recorded the shutout in goal.
Notre Dame, which improved to 15-7, concludes its regular season tonight at Central.
Senior Blake Kingree scored both goals as the Indians closed their regular season with a road victory.
Kingree staked Jackson (9-10-1) to a 1-0 halftime lead and sealed the win with a goal late in the second half.
Ben Johnston made four saves to record the shutout.
Jackson begins Class 3 District 1 action Saturday. The fourth-seeded Indians will face No 5 Poplar Bluff at noon in St. Louis.
