High school roundup: Montgomery's big night helps Chaffee to 41-39 win vs. Jefferson

Charlie Montgomery capped an incredible night with an interception that clinched Chaffee's 41-39 victory over host Jefferson on Friday night.

The junior, who has been slowed by injuries most of the season, scored four touchdowns and picked off two passes for the Red Devils.

"He kept getting better and better," said Chaffee coach Charlie Vickery, who hit the milestone of 200 career victories. "Tonight he was full strength -- or pretty close to it."

Chaffee (3-5) led 41-33 late in the game when Jefferson scored its final touchdown and went for two to tie. The Red Devils stopped the Blue Jays and recovered an onside kick, but their offense stalled.

Jefferson started its final drive on its 17-yard line and drove past midfield before Montgomery's interception with under a minute to play ended the threat.

Montgomery finished with 120 yards rushing on 20 attempts and caught six passes for 81 yards.

All but one of those passes were thrown by his brother, sophomore Peyton Montgomery, who was 13 for 19 for 200 yards. He also rushed 10 times for 70 yards.

Jimmy Golden threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Charlie Montgomery to open the Red Devils' scoring in the first quarter. He caught a 16-yard pass from Peyton Montgomery later in the quarter.

Chaffee scored three times in the second quarter and took a 33-27 lead into halftime.

Charlie Montgomery ran in from 7 yards out for the first score. Then Layton Tenkhoff connected with Peyton Montgomery on touchdown passes of 82 and 30 yards.

Both teams went scoreless in the third quarter before Charlie Montgomery scored on a 25-yard run to cap the Red Devils' scoring in the fourth.

Tenkhoff finished with three catches for 114 yards.

VOLLEYBALL

Leopold wins title

Leopold defeated Oak Ridge 25-18, 25-18 to win the Mississippi Valley Conference tournament championship.

Caitlin Petty had 13 kills and 16 assists for Leopold (22-3-1), while Alli Woodfin added 13 kills and two aces. Sydney Eeftink recorded 18 assists and three aces, and Denai Arnzen had 10 digs and four kills.

McKenzie Elam and Emma Hemmann both had seven kills for Oak Ridge (10-19-1), and setter Chelsea Seyer finished with 13 assists.

Meadow Heights defeated Greenville 25-4, 14-25, 25-23 to capture third place.

Bernie 25 25 Advance 21 19

Bernie defeated top-seeded Advance (23-4-1) to claim the Stoddard County tournament championship.

Liza Gray had six kills to lead the Hornets. Aimie Simmers added four kills and six blocks.

Jacqueline Maddox had 12 digs and Allie Below had 10 assists.

Perryville 1, Notre Dame 0

Kyle Wood scored in the second overtime to lead the host Pirates (13-3-1) past the Bulldogs (13-5). Emmanuel Miranda assisted on the goal.

Luke Dobbelare recorded six saves for Perryville.
