Jackson senior Clay Darnell beat his nearest competitor by 30 feet in the discus competition at the Festus Early Bird Invitational on Saturday, and that might be the least impressive thing about his 173-feet-4-inch throw.
The throw set broke Jackson's school record, was the longest by a high schooler in the state this year and the 33rd longest in the nation.
Darnell's win helped Jackson, which sent only part of its team to Festus while the other members traveled to Notre Dame, finish fifth out of 30 boys teams.
The Jackson girls team, also with a partial roster, finished seventh out of 33 girls teams.
Defending state champion Sierra Maddox won the pole vault with a height of 11 feet, 6 inches.
