Senior Night probably couldn't have gotten any wilder for the Leopold volleyball team as the state-ranked Wildcats bounced back from Wednesday's tough loss against state-ranked St. Vincent to defeat the Class 3 Notre Dame Bulldogs 34-32, 16-25, 25-20 in a three-set thriller at Leopold High School.
"I think we just rebounded from last night and they were just aggressive," Leopold coach Sandy Davis said. "The girls just came out and played. ... Both teams just played. It was good, very exciting."
Senior standout Caitlin Petty led the Wildcats with 22 kills, 15 assists, 10 digs, two blocks and two aces. Senior Bailee Cope recorded 12 kills, five digs, three aces and one block for Leopold, which improved to 23-3-3. Senior Ashlyn Bucher tallied 11 digs and six kills, and senior Leah Landewee added 16 digs and three kills. Junior Emily Seiler contributed 19 assists and eight digs for the Wildcats.
Riding high on the momentum from its sweep of Class 3 district foe Dexter on Wednesday, Notre Dame failed to rise to the overcome the Wildcats.
"It was a pretty tense environment," Notre Dame coach Tara Stroup said. "It was a crazy game. Leopold really wanted to win and they played hard. They played great defense, a lot of rallies back and forth. I thought it was a pretty well played game."
Junior Abbie McAlister led the Bulldogs with 15 kills, while senior Lydia Goodson added 10 kills. Sam Feeney had a big night with 31 assists and 25 digs for Notre Dame, which finished the regular season with a record of 22-7-1. Briley Bieser, Sam Brennan and Callie Nanney each had four kills for the Bulldogs.
JV -- Notre Dame won 25-14, 25-8
McKenzie Bess notched 15 digs as the Tigers fought hard but couldn't stave off the Crusaders on Senior Night.
Afton Brown tallied six digs and Gabbi Hulcy put up three blocks for Central, which closed out the regular season with a record of 8-22.
Raegan Wieser recorded seven kills and six assists to lead Saxony Lutheran. Jordan Hecht tallied seven digs and Abigail Bergmann added six digs for the Crusaders. Amber Bergmann put up two blocks and Brianna Mueller had 10 assists for Saxony Lutheran, which ended its regular season with a record of 14-14-5.
Both teams begin district play on Monday.
JV -- Saxony Lutheran won 25-9, 25-22
Kyle Wood scored two goals to help lead the Pirates in the conference road victory over the Owls in Imperial, Missouri, as Perryville clinched the Jefferson County Activities Association (JCAA) Conference title for the second straight season.
Eann Bergman added one goal and one assist for Perryville (21-1). Matt Moran had the other goal for the Pirates. Nathan Noland, Trevor Martin and Pablo Mattingly each had one assist.
Goalkeeper Luke Dobbelare had two saves in the shutout.
JV -- Perryville won 2-0
Senior Ryan Palmer scored one goal and had one assist as the Knights clinched their 10th win of the season and spoiled the Crusaders' Senior Night in double overtime.
Dustin Lorenz had the other goal, and senior Luke LeGrand added an assist for Saxony Lutheran (4-13-1).
Goalkeeper Jacob Stueve had 18 saves.
Farmington improved to 10-8.
