Eli Pike of Jackson and Corey Connell of Central qualified for the Class 4 state golf meet, finishing among the top 12 individuals at the Class 4 Sectional 1 meet Thursday at Crown Pointe Golf Club in Farmington, Mo.

Pike, a freshman, shot a 6-over-par 76 to tie for third place. Pike finished five shots behind medalist Ben Crancer of Kirkwood.

Pike was one of three Jackson golfers to compete in the sectional meet. Connor Thrower shot an 82, and Adam Way finished at 100.

Connell, a senior, tied for seventh with a 78 to qualify for the state meet for the third consecutive year. Connell, who finished 27th at the state meet last year, won the Class 4 District 1 tournament last week at Aberdeen Golf Course in Eureka, Mo. Connell also was medalist of the SEMO Conference meet Monday.

Central's Travis Simmons shot an 81 and missed the cut by one stroke.

"The course played very difficult," said Central coach Dick Wadlington, noting long grass, fast greens and wind as factors in scores that ran higher than normal.

Wadlington said the rough was long and thick, with the shortest grass 3 or 4 inches deep.

"When you missed the fairway you had trouble getting it back on the golf course," Wadlington said.

Poplar Bluff qualified its entire team for the Class 4 state tournament, which will be held May 14 and 15 at Silo Ridge Golf and Country Club in Bolivar, Mo. The Mules finished with a 319 total and 10 strokes ahead of runner-up Rockwood Summit, which also qualified.
