Jackson's wrestlers enjoyed a successful opening day at the state meet in Columbia.
Five Indians wrestlers grabbed a victory in their opening-round match Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals. Jackson stands fourth in the team standings with 17 points.
Sophomore Kodi Byrd (103 pounds) eked out a 6-4 win over Bay Roehr of Christian Brothers. Byrd led 6-3 after the second period and held on for the win. He will face Daniel Lewis of Blue Springs in the quarters.
Senior Levi Rayburn (112) never gave DeMarcus Gurlly a chance. Rayburn led 3-0 after the first period and rolled to an 11-2 win. Rayburn will wrestle Hunter Neighbors of Jefferson City in the next round.
Senior Jordan Reisenbichler (119) built an early lead and cruised past Alex Shea of Hickman 9-3. Reisenbichler next will face Francis Howell Central's Ben Henson.
Senior Levi Hobeck (140) scored two points in all three periods to defeat Matt Behr of Francis Howell 6-2. Hobeck advanced to meet Blue Springs' Keenan Hagerty.
Senior Ryan Marble (171), who will compete at the U.S. Military Academy next season, pinned his opening-round opponent in 1 minute, 51 seconds. Marble enjoyed a 6-2 advantage when he pinned Holt's Gaige Dunnerman. Marble will wrestle Danny Klick of William Chrisman.
Senior Luke Slinkard (HWT) got pinned by Lee Summit West's Evan Boehm in 3:24 but rebounded to beat Ozark's Jarrett Rogers 5-1 in a consolation match.
Senior Michael Riney lost to Ozark's Willy Gray 4-2 in the first round but responded by pinning Park Hill South's Nick Gillespie in 2:48.
Senior Blake Hooe (145) got pinned by Fort Zumwalt West's Kyle Hussey in 1:21 in the opening round before getting pinned by Troy Buchanan's Tim Hoffman in 1:39 to end Hooe's state meet.
All three Central wrestlers remained alive in the tournament after the opening day.
Junior Austin Martin (140) advanced with a 13-10 victory over St. Charles' Ryan Hanmore. He will face Branson's Michael Cuthbertson in the quarterfinals.
Senior Kevin Flesher (189) knocked off Nick Lovejoy of Webb City 6-2 by scoring four points in the second period. Flesher will square off with Fort Zumwalt South's Conor Vortherms in the quarters.
Senior Jawaun Howard (145) dropped a 13-8 decision to St. Charles West's Christian Buchanon but extended his state meet by pinning Josh Brust of Smith Cotton in 1:41.
It was a rough day for the Notre Dame wrestlers. All five state qualifiers saw their state meets end after the first day of competition.
Sophomore Trever Foltz (171) was pinned in 3:35 by Harrisonville's Jasen McGee in the first round then suffered a 9-8 setback to Christian Bledsoe of John Burroughs.
Senior Ryan Harter (189) was pinned in 1:50 by Osage's Frank Kohout in the first round then lost 16-0 to Fulton's Sean Leutkemeyer.
Senior Austin Kight (130) was pinned in his opening-round match by Excelsior's Brennan Johnson. The match lasted 1:12. Kight then was pinned by Clinton's Josh Ryun in 52 seconds in their consolation match.
Senior Jacob Murphy (140) was pinned in 1:16 by Fulton's Josh Curtis in the first round then was pinned by Seneca's Trevor Sill in 2:30 in the consolation round.
Sophomore Trenton Gross' (119) tournament came to a quick end. He was pinned in 1:30 by Nevada's Tanner Charles in the first round. He then was pinned by McCluer South-Berkeley's Wardell Morgan in 2:49 in a consolation match.
Alayah Cooper-Johnson recorded a double-double in the Tigers' home win.
Johnson had 12 points, 10 rebounds and five steals, while Chelsea Pannier had 12 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for the Tigers (10-12).
Natalie Bauwens led Perryville with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Allison Moldenhauer added nine points, five rebounds and four steals for the Pirates (9-13).
