JACKSON, Mo. -- Jackson, which has been the area's hottest high school boys soccer team in recent weeks, continued its strong play Thursday with a 2-0 SEMO Conference victory over visiting Notre Dame.
"This was a big win for us," said Jackson coach Zack Walton. "We had a good possession game and our bench played extremely well."
The Bulldogs and Indians battled to a scoreless tie in the first half, then at the 13-minute mark of the second half Jackson broke the ice as Justin Vines scored on a rebound of a Greg Schwab shot to make it 1-0.
Jackson scored its second goal when Michael Schuette tapped in a header off a corner kick by Matt Buttrey.
Indians' goalkeeper Austin McDowell kept the Bulldogs in check with several nice saves as he earned the shutout.
"My congratulations to Jackson," said Notre Dame coach Brad Wittenborn. "It was a well-played soccer game. This wasn't our first loss, but it was the first time I felt we were outplayed, even though we didn't play poorly."
Both teams have identical 9-3-1 records.
Notre Dame's junior varsity, now 5-1-2, won 1-0 behind a goal from Adam Prasanphanich, with an assist from Jonathan Market.
Cape Central 1, Poplar Bluff 0
POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- A first-half goal by Chris Cole stood up for the Tigers as they improved to 7-6-2.
Paul Miller assisted on the game's lone tally while goalkeeper Trevor Blattner recorded the shutout.
"The defense played a real strong game," said Central coach Tom Doyle. "They pushed us pretty hard in the second half. We bent but didn't break."
Central's JV improved to 7-1 with a 2-0 victory as Heath Orr and Luke Kester each had one goal and one assist.
CROSS COUNTRY
Anna-Jonesboro Invitational
ANNA, Ill. -- Cape Central's teams had a big day as the boys and girls both finished first. Notre Dame was fourth in both divisions.
On the boys side, Central and Carbondale both scored 40 points, but the Tigers won the tie-breaker as sixth runner Jake Knepp finished ahead of the Terriers' sixth runner.
Central's girls had a more comfortable victory, scoring 39 points. Carbondale was second with 54.
All seven of Central's boys runners earned medals by finishing in the top 20. Gabe Austin was sixth, Justin Hawkins seventh, Ross Tilghman eighth, Mark Stone ninth, Mike Gerber 10th, Knepp 13th and Josh Revelle 18th.
Six of the seven Central girls earned medals, led by Kim Pancoast in fifth place. Rachael Sprigg, Magin Patrick, Whitney Pingel and Casey Brennan all tied for seventh while Meagan Freeze was 15th.
"We had a real good day," said Central coach Mark Hahn.
Notre Dame had two girls medalists as Susan Judd was 11th and Sarah Unterreiner 19th.

Chester Invitational
CHESTER, Ill. -- Perryville's boys were second while Kelly's boys finished fourth and the Kelly girls were seventh.
Perryville's Nathan Moore won the boys race while other medalists for the Pirates were Jacob Schneider, fourth; Kent Hadler, seventh; and Tyson Rellergert, 13th.
Adam Daughhetee of Kelly was second, with Lance Scheffer 15th.
In the girls race, Perryille's Katrina Bockhorn placed second.
VOLLEYBALL
Jackson 7-15-15
Notre Dame 15-5-7
JACKSON, Mo. -- Jackson, after losing the first set, stormed back to win the last two decisively as the Lady Indians improved their record to 13-4-2.
Jessica Koeper had a big match for the Lady Indians with 12 assists, five kills, eight blocks and eight digs.
Andrea Koeper had six kills, seven blocks and 13 digs; Jennifer Mesey contributed five kills and eight blocks; and Jenna Leet added five kills and 14 digs.
Jackson's JV won 15-12, 13-15, 15-13.
Caruthersville 16-15
Cape Central 14-13
Central fell to 2-13 as Caruthersville won two close games.
For Central, Mandy Blattner had six service points, four kills and 10 digs; Hanna Griesemer had eight service points and five assists; and Sarah Brown added five service points and five assists.
Central's JV lost 15-8, 15-4.
Bell City 15-15
Scott City 8-12
BELL CITY, Mo -- Katie Spears had 13 kills to lead Bell City (5-12-4).
Whitney Abner had 18 assists and 11 service points, Brooke Stephens had 11 service points and Amanda Bailey added four digs.
Scott City's JV posted a 15-10, 7-15, 15-8 victory.
Festus 15-15
Perryville 3-3
PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- The Lady Pirates (6-12) fell to powerful Festus in a Jefferson County Conference matchup.
Natalie Bohnert led Perryville with four kills and two service points. Emily Amberger had three service points and Andrea Buerck added four assists.
Perryville's JV lost 15-6, 15-13.

St. Vincent 13-11
IMPERIAL -- St. Vincent (9-8-4) lost two competitive games.
Danielle Sutterer had four kills for the Squaws while Chelsey Brown had three aces.
St. Vincent's JV suffered a 15-12, 7-15, 15-10 setback.
Leopold 15-15
Oran 1-8
ORAN, Mo. -- Leopold (11-4-3) cruised to a straight-set victory.
The Lady Wildcats were led by Holly Jansen, 10 kills; Courtney Wesbecher, seven kills; and Jessica Bollinger, three blocks. Laura Jansen and Wendy Vandeven dished out10 assists each.
Leopold's JV improved to 8-2-1 with a 15-12, 16-14 win.
Zalma 15-12-15
Bernie 4-15-11
BERNIE, Mo. -- Zalma (12-3-3) picked up an impressive victory as it slipped past perennial state power Bernie.
Leaders for the Lady Bulldogs were Erica Campbell with five kills, 11 service points and three aces; Amber Buehler with 10 kills, 11 service points and four aces; Carrie Pixley with 11 kills, five service points and four aces; and Selena Slaughter with 29 assists.
Zalma's JV lost 15-6, 15-2.
SOFTBALL
Egyptian 4, Cape Central 3
TAMMS, Ill. -- Two unearned runs helped doom Central to just its sixth loss of the season.
The Lady Tigers (18-6) had six hits, two each by Amber Voerg and Jessica McDonald.
Cassie Gross was the losing pitcher, allowing five hits and two earned runs in three innings. Holly Schnurbusch hurled three scoreless frames, allowing one hit.
Jackson 3, Hillsboro 1
HILLSBORO, Mo. -- Casi Childers fired a two-hitter to pace Jackson (11-14).
Jeanna Bolen had three of the Lady Indians seven hits. She also stole three bases.
St. Vincent 15, Herculaneum 7
HERCULANEUM, Mo. -- Julie Hager pitched a two-hitter to lead St. Vincent (8-10).
Hager allowed four earned runs while striking out three and walking five in going the seven-inning distance.
Nicole Hadler had three of St. Vincent's 13 hits. Jean Brown and Amanda Brown added two hits apiece.
Delta 6-19
Sikeston 1-6
DELTA, Mo. -- The Lady Bobcats (4-6) swept two five-inning games from Sikeston.
Delta rode the arm and bat of Rebecca Cook in the opener.
Cook allowed no earned runs while giving up two hits, striking out eight and walking one. She also led Delta offensively with two of its five hits.
The Bobcats romped in the nightcap, banging out 16 hits and scoring 19 runs.
Tiffany Johnson, Erin Cook, Rebecca Below and Stephanie Dannenmueller each went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
Despite control problems, Ashley Martin picked up the win as she went two innings, giving up five walks, one hit and striking out one.
Johnson relieved Martin in the third and held Sikeston to two hits and one run the rest of the way.
