The Poplar Bluff boys basketball team found itself trailing early in overtime after overcoming a three-point deficit in the final minute of regulation Tuesday.
It didn't last long.
Kendric McCain's drive to the basket tied it just 17 seconds after Jackson scored first in the extra session. The senior was fouled on the play, and the Indians also were whistled for a technical foul, which led to a pair of free throws by Lance Gray that gave Poplar Bluff the lead.
The Mules closed out a 56-52 overtime win at home.
McCain finished with a career-high 20 points to go with seven steals, six rebounds and a key assist with his team leading by a point late in overtime.
Michael Griggs got an offensive rebound in the closing seconds of regulation and hit a free throw to tie the game at 45-45.
The Mules were down three following a dunk by Jackson's John Meyer with 67 seconds left in the fourth quarter, and the Indians got back the ball on a steal by Calvin Lysell.
But a trap set by Griggs and Gray forced a turnover with Gray coming away with the steal and scoring on the other end with 39 seconds left. Griggs then got another steal 6 seconds later when the Mules pressed. The senior pounced on a loose ball near midcourt and called timeout.
Griggs came down with a rebound off Gray's miss in the closing seconds and was sent to the free-throw line where he missed the first but splashed home the second to even the score.
Jackson's last-second shot from the corner missed.
Meyer led Jackson (11-4, 1-1 SEMO) with 14 points, while Luke Stevens added 13 and Braxton McDowell chipped in four 3s for 12.
The Indians missed just three shots in the first half but only led 28-27 at halftime.
