High school roundup: Jackson advances seven wrestlers to state meet

Jackson sent five wrestlers into the championship round of the Class 4 District 1 meet Saturday at CBC, but the Indians did not come away with a district champion.

The Indians, who placed third in the team standings, did advance seven wrestlers to this week's state tournament in Columbia, Mo.

Among the championship-round casualties was Jackson's Jarrett Reisenbichler, who suffered his first loss of the season by injury default. Reisenbichler (41-1) led 9-5 with 29 seconds left in the match when he was forced to take a third injury timeout for a balky knee.

"He's had a knee injury for a while," Jackson coach Steve Wachter said about the sophomore. "He had to call a third injury timeout. When you call timeout three times, that's the match.

"He's going to wrestle at the state meet. I think he'll be all right. We just couldn't take a chance there. It was a tough way to lose, but that's part of it."

Also finishing second for the Indians were Jake Byrd (120), Tyler Rush (138), Josh Stone (182) and Clay Darnell (220). Winning third-place matches were Cody Byrd (113) and Clayton Collier (152).

Byrd (39-7) lost a 3-0 decision to Seckman's Luke Weiland. Rush (41-8) lost to Lafayette's Nick Olejnik. Stone (33-10) dropped a 9-5 decision to Kirkwood's Michael Burns, while Darnell lost a tight 6-4 decision to Oakville's Tyrone Willis.

ND advances four

Notre Dame advanced four wrestlers at the Class 2 District 1 meet in Ste. Genevieve, Mo.

The Bulldogs will send Noah Huff (106), Aaron Schlosser (132), Austin Harter (138) and Joseph Yuede (170) to the state meet. Huff and Yuede placed third in the district, while Schlosser and Harter finished fourth.

Huff (36-11) won his first quarterfinal match by pin before losing an 11-8 decision to Ste. Genevieve's Ryan Grieshaber in the semifinals. Huff rebounded with a sudden-death decision over St. Cair's Kris Heembrock in the consolation semifinals, then pinned Sumner's Deandre Ball in the third-place match at 3 minutes, 48 seconds.

Schlosser (7-13) was pinned in the quarterfinals, then won two consolation matches before getting pinned by Park Hills' Michael Clark in the third-place match.

Harter (34-16) lost a 1-0 decision in the quarterfinals but reached the third-place match with a pin and disqualification victory. He lost to Austin Mertz of Sullivan in sudden death in the third-place match.

Yuede (23-8) lost his opening match by pin but bounced back with four victories. He posted two pins and won by injury default to reach the third-place final. He then pinned Ricardo Duver of Affton in 4:04.

Central advances one

Central heavyweight Chris Bryant was the Tigers' lone state qualifier from the Class 3 District 1 meet in Farmington, Mo.

Bryant finished third, pinning Washington's Matt Pecka 1:47 to round out his tournament.
