Central won just one event Thursday at the Show Me Conference swim meet, but the Tigers claimed three seconds as it showed superior team depth in winning the crown by just five points at Central Municipal Pool.
Chleo LeGrand accounted for the Tigers' individual win in the diving competition with a score of 389.90.
"It was a good meet," LeGrand said. "I felt strong, and my entries were clean. It's probably my best meet of the year."
The Tigers finished with 409 points in the six-team meet, with runner-up Notre Dame close behind at 404. Defending champion Jackson won six of the meet's 12 events but placed third at 361.
"We had the depth," Central coach Dayna Powell said. "What was so exciting is that we only won one event but we had girls who kept working very hard to try to get those places. It was a total team effort."
Powell said that while one of her top swimmers, Josie Young, was not in attendance due to illness, she was pleased with the group effort.
"I didn't know how close it would be. It took the whole meet to catch up and pass Notre Dame. They beat us in the last relay but we had enough to hold on," she said. "Everyone on the team contributed. For a coach, it was one of the best kinds of meet because of that team effort."
Notre Dame won one event as Madison Heisserer placed first in a state-qualifying time of 1 minute, 1.20 seconds in the 100 backstroke. The freshman had a second state-qualifying time in the 200 freestyle (2:00.78), placing second behind Jackson senior standout Kyleigh Troxel.
Troxel, who was named the meet's Most Valuable Swimmer, won two events along with freshman Caitlyn Palmer. Both also swam legs on the winning 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay.
Troxel posted state-qualifying times in winning the 200 freestyle (1:56.68) and 500 freestyle (5:07.54). Palmer also had state-qualifying times in her victories in the 100 butterfly (57.90) and 50 freestyle (24.90). Jenny Powell and Lexi Burgi also swam legs on the winning relays, which both posted state-qualifying times.
Natalie King also claimed a pair of first for the St. Vincent/Perryville cooperative team that placed fifth. King, a junior, won the 200 individual medley (2:21.33) and the 100 breaststroke (1:14.62) for the Piranhas.
