Poplar Bluff Mules finished first in five events and set state-qualifying times in four events to win the Splash Out Cancer Meet at the Central Municipal Pool.
Eight teams participated in the fourth annual meet to help raise funds for the Pink Up Cape/Dig for Life. While Pink Up Month is in October, Central swim coach Dayna Powell said that the swimming teams still wanted to participate.
"The girls wanted to do something for others, so we decided to sell T-shirts and give a portion of that to Dig for Life," Powell said. "The girls did a great job. This year we sold 172 [shirts] and Poplar Bluff sold 113, so it was a good year."
Powell said this year's meet helped raise approximately $2,100, one-third of which will be given to the Dig for Life foundation and two-thirds to two families who have been affected by cancer to help cover medical bills.
"It's really nice, especially this time of year, to see these athletes getting involved to help others," Powell said. "It's just a really positive impact that they can have. ... I have a lot of respect for kids who help out like that."
Poplar Bluff finished 26 points ahead of last year's champion Notre Dame. The Bulldogs placed first in three events, two of which were won by junior Madison Heisserer in state-qualifying times in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke.
Jackson junior Caitlyn Palmer also posted state-qualifying times in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. The Indians finished three points behind Saxony Lutheran to take fifth place.
Host Central finished third.
