Fresh off a vengeful win against district nemesis Hillsboro on Monday, the Central softball team delivered yet another blow, defeating the Perryville Pirates 5-4 on Wednesday in Perryville, Missouri.
The Tigers posted an early 5-0 lead in the second inning that proved to be their saving grace. The Pirates did not get on the board until the fifth inning and rallied late in the seventh inning but fell one run short.
Maggie Groshong once again helped lead her team to victory in the circle. She pitched a complete game and recorded five strikeouts.
Kaylie George hit a double for Central (2-0).
Pitcher Macey Hall endured her first loss and also had a double at the plate for the Pirates. She threw a complete game and had one strikeout.
Andrea Pannier went 2 for 4 at the plate to pace Perryville (2-1).
The Pirates host Jackson today, while the Tigers travel to Portageville in the Bulldogs' season opener.

Jackson experienced a sense of deja vu in its first game of the season against Seckman at Jackson City Park.
The Jaguars dealt the Indians a 9-4 loss in last year's season opener.
"They have a very strong team up and down their lineup," Jackson coach Ashley Litzelfelner said of the Jaguars. "They're probably the best team in our district."
Maddy Strickland capped Seckman's victory with a home run and went 3 for 4 at the plate. She also went the distance in the circle and tallied four strikeouts for the Jaguars (1-0).
"Their pitcher isn't only a good pitcher, but she's a good hitter, too," Litzelfelner said.
Sicily Johnston suffered her first pitching loss for the Indians. She went 1 1/2 innings with one walk and no strikeouts.
Erica Gray and McKenzie Bartels each hit a double to pace Jackson (0-1).
The Indians travel to Perryville today, while the Jaguars will visit Webster Groves on Friday.

Cierra Crites belted a triple and a double, but it wasn't enough as the Red Devils fell short on the road to Notre Dame's junior varsity squad.
Carleigh Burnett was the losing pitcher. She threw two innings and gave up seven unearned runs on four hits with three walks.
Kylie Wilhite and Julia Sutterfield each had a double for Chaffee (0-2).
Ellie Retz was the winning pitcher. She threw a complete game and allowed three earned runs on 13 hits.
Addrianna Landewee had two doubles, and Lily Dohogne drove in two runs for the Bulldogs (1-0).

Sarah Bell and Allison Gray each carded 3-over-par 39s to pace the Bulldogs as Notre Dame finished seven strokes behind Eldorado, Ill., at the Union County Country Club in Anna, Ill.
Eldorado's Taylor Goodley finished with a 3-under-par 33 to earn the medalist honors.
