PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- Featuring a balanced scoring attack, the Cape Central Tigers eased past the Perryville Pirates 65-60 in its season opener Tuesday night.

The Tigers started slow, falling into a 10-point hole in the first quarter, but trailed just 18-17 entering the second quarter. Cape Central moved ahead 39-34 by the intermission.

"We wanted to play an up-tempo game and we accomplished that in the first half, but the game reversed itself in the second half," said Tiger coach Brett Reutzel. "Some of it was us, getting tentative, but Perryville deserves some credit for slowing us down."

The second half was more defense-oriented as each team managed 26 points apiece.

Cape Central padded its lead to 53-47 by the close of the third quarter.

Michael Cox led the Tigers with 11 points, followed by 10 each from Trevor Blattner and Chris Cole.

For the Pirates, Thomas Barber paced the offense with 14 points while Chad Ozark chipped in with 12.

"We still need to learn to handle adversity and pressure," Perryville coach Jeff Steffens said. "But we played hard to the end."

The win put Cape Central at 1-0 and represented a breakthrough of sorts for Reutzel.

"We've never won our opener, so I've never been 1-0 as a head coach," he said.

Jackson 64, Potosi 62

POTOSI, Mo. -- Jackson got a late goal on a put-back by Seth McDowell to squeak out a win in coach Mike Kiehne's coaching debut.

With Jackson leading 48-40 at the end of the third quarter, the Trojans battled back to tie at 62 with 24 seconds left in the game.

The Indians broke Potosi's full-court press and put up an errant shot which McDowell rebounded and put back in for the game-winner.

"We got a taste of everything tonight," Kiehne said. "We played with a lead, we played from behind, we had to execute in a close game and we had to make a play at the end of regulation to win."

Matt Ferrell led the Indians with 22 points and seven rebounds, while McDowell had 14.

WOODLAND TOURNAMENT

MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Just eight days after losing by 16 points to Leopold, sixth-seeded Meadow Heights made up quite a bit of ground, but still fell 48-47 to the third-seeded Leopold in a first-round game of the Woodland Tournament.

In a consolation semifinal game played later, No. 5 Delta knocked off No. 8 Zalma 76-54.

The Panthers outscored the Wildcats 25-14 in the fourth quarter, but got out to a slow start as they went into the second quarter trailing 16-4. Josh Mayfield led the Panthers (1-2) with 24 points -- more than half his team's total.

Daniel Schaab led Leopold with 17 points, while Ashton James had 16 and Josh Vandeven 10.

"We lost but we played very, very well," said first-year Meadow Heights coach Jerry Tucker. "We came out slow again in the first quarter. We're still learning how to mentally get ready. We just started playing in the fourth quarter. They decided it was time to go get it and they went after it. Mayfield got on fire and started stroking it."

In the consolation semifinal, Delta got 21 points from Lance Kinder and 20 points from Craig Brock as the Bobcats had six players score at least eight points.

Steve McCain and Chad Wiseman had 15 points each for Zalma, while Brad Isaac had 14.

On Monday night, top-seeded Advance thumped Zalma 65-28. Second-seeded Woodland defeated Bloomfield 87-61 and No. 4 Oak Ridge slipped past Delta 50-44.

On Thursday, Meadow Heights will play Bloomfield at 5:30 in a consolation semifinal; Advance will take on Oak Ridge at 7 in a championship semifinal and Woodland will challenge Leopold at 8:30 in the other semifinal.

ORAN TOURNAMENT

ORAN, Mo. -- Fifth-seeded Scott County Central defeated No. 4 Gideon Tuesday night in the first round of the Oran Tournament, while seventh-seeded Oran pulled off an upset of No. 3 Kelly in the consolation semifinals.

For Scott Central, Todd Blissett scored 17 points, while Chris Pullen added 15 and Terrance Williams put in 13. Phillip Drerup and Kerry Raymond led Gideon with 18 points each.

Gideon made just three of its 10 foul shots.

In the Oran-Kelly game, the Eagles got 18 points from Adam Friga, 18 from Ryne Wood and 17 from Garrett Cook.

Mike Romas scored 18 points to lead Kelly, while Brett Burger scored 11.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Cape Central 52, Oakville 18

OAKVILLE, Mo. -- Cape Central's Lady Tigers flashed sharp claws while the Oakville Lady Tigers appeared toothless.

Cape Central cruised into the championship game of the Oakville Tournament by crushing host Oakville 52-18 on Tuesday.

Described as "a physical game" by Lady Tiger coach Mark Ruark, Cape Central's smothering defense sparked the victory.

Leading 36-18, the Lady Tigers outscored Oakville 16-0 in the final quarter.

"We did a good job getting in the passing lanes and really disrupting their offense," said Ruark.

The fine defensive effort was even more remarkable considering the Lady Tigers were forced to play with only six players throughout most of the contest.

Cape Central went into the game minus injured starting center Heather Jenkins and lost backup center Kate Richards during the game.

The Lady Tigers of Cape Central were led offensively by Katie Dougherty with 16 points and Sarah Hyslop with a double-double, 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Central will meet Francis Howell for the championship on Thursday.

BOYS SWIMMING

Lafayette 122, Central 64

Cape Central's swimming team did better than expected in its season opener Tuesday night in a loss to Lafayette.

"I am so pleased and we're so excited about today's meet," said Central coach Dayna Powell. "After the first four events, we were winning and that was surprising. We know Lafayette's a tough team and if we can swim this well against them, we can beat some teams."

Central scored 47 more points in the meet than it did in the same meet last year.

Earning first places for the Tigers were Stratton Tingle (200 freestyle, 1:59.54), Casey Dwyre (50 freestyle, :24.89) and the 200 freestyle relay team of Jon Lowrance, Dwyre, Paul Miller and Tingle.

The biggest surprise to Powell was Dwyre's performance. Dwyre, a senior, didn't start swimming with the team until last year.

"We've been holding him back and trying to get him in shape," Powell said, "and he comes here and wins."

NEW MADRID, Mo. -- Jackson opened its season with a convincing victory over the Eagles.

The Indians received six forfeit victories, but looked good on the mat when given the chance, Jackson coach Steve Wachter said.

"Technically, I thought we wrestled real well," Wachter said. "They were real physical and strong and I thought we wrestled well considering it was our first match."
