Cole Nichols hit a triple to produce the only extra-base hit of the game as the Bell City baseball team downed host Saxony Lutheran 7-0 in the opening round of pool play Thursday in the Oak Ridge Invitational Tournament.

Austin Hicks went the distance to get the win for Bell City. He recorded 11 strikeouts and walked one.

Paris Johnson took the loss. He pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits. He struck out five and walked one.

Andrew Hartmann, Nathan Hurst and Jake Wyatt each had a hit for Saxony Lutheran (6-3).

The Cubs followed up the win over the Crusaders with a 22-0 blistering of Zalma in their final pool play game. Hicks belted a triple and drove in five runs to help lead Bell City to victory.

Peyton Maddox got the win for the Cubs on the mound. He pitched three innings, gave up three hits, struck out five and walked zero batters. He also reached base all of his four times at the plate and batted in three runs for Bell City (7-2). Nichols added a double and five RBIs for the Cubs.

Dallan Stotts had a triple, and Brent Overbey went 2-for-2 at bat to pace Zalma (0-2). The Bulldogs will face the Crusaders today in the final pool play game.

Bell City advances to Saturday's tournament championship with opponent, location and time to be determined.

Tyler Sprouse sustained the loss. He pitched 3 1/3 innings and gave up seven runs (five earned) on three hits. He struck out two and walked five.

Brock Baugher hit a double and reached base all of his three times at the plate, as the Tigers picked up the rain-shortened five-inning victory over the visiting Redskins of Wolf Lake, Illinois.

Cooper Crosnoe was the winning pitcher and also doubled for Cape Central (7-5). He threw a complete game and allowed one unearned run with three strikeouts and one walk.

Nick Crane threw a complete game in taking the loss for Shawnee (3-5). He allowed two earned runs and recorded three strikeouts. He also had the only hit for the Redskins.

Sam Wallace went the distance to get the win. He allowed one earned run, struck out four and walked three.

Kasten Campbell smacked two doubles and got on base all three in all three of his at-bats to lead East Prairie (5-3, 1-2). Carson Aycock added a double and two RBIs, while Dalton Coots drove in three runs for the visiting Eagles.

Jordan Rellergert doubled twice and batted in two runs for St. Vincent (6-2, 2-0 JCAA Conference-Small Schools Division).
