The St. Vincent football team overcame a first-quarter deficit but was held scoreless in the fourth quarter in a 33-28 loss to St. Pius X in Festus on Friday night.
The Indians trailed 13-7 after one quarter but outscored St. Pius in the second.
Nick Mingione recovered a St. Pius fumble late in the first half and returned it about 50 yards for a score to put the Indians up 21-20 at the break. St. Vincent led 28-20 after three quarters.
"We were able to compete with them all the way through until the very last couple minutes of the fourth quarter," St. Vincent coach Nathan Rowland said. "We were called for a targeting penalty that gave them a big first down. We gave up a few big plays at the end, and then after they scored their go-ahead touchdown with 40 seconds left, we returned the kick to about the 50."
The Indians moved the ball into the red zone and had a good opportunity to get the ball in the end zone but were unsuccessful.
"We took our shot at one-on-one coverage," Rowland said. "Two players' feet got tangled up and our player ended up on the ground and they intercepted the ball. It was just a tough no-call."
Quarterback Joe Whistler and Cole Steinbecker each ran for a touchdown and David Camarillo had a touchdown reception in the loss.
St. Vincent falls to 1-6 and will face Grandview on Friday.
"We learned that our guys will not quit," Rowland said. "They were down early, 13-0, and they fought back and took the lead before halftime. They played as hard as any team we've been around the past few years, and they played well enough to win."
The Kelly football team had its first varsity winning streak snapped with a 63-18 loss to Caruthersville.
"Caruthersville -- they're still a power in Class 2, and we're just trying to catch up," Kelly coach Kenneth Riedinger said.
Maurice Davis, Dalton Huffman and Ethan Faries each scored for the Hawks, including on a kickoff return.
The Pirates fell to 2-5 with their home loss the Dragons (4-3).
