Last week: Malden 55, East Prairie 6; Scott City 28, Chaffee 6
Last year: Chaffee 54, East Prairie 32
Outlook: Chaffee has beaten East Prairie the last three years but will encounter an improved Eagles squad that will be looking to bounce back from its first lopsided loss of the season.
The Red Devils are off to their first 0-4 start since a winless 2005 campaign, and the news got worse this week with the loss of all-state senior lineman Trevor Morehead. Morehead went down with a knee injury in the first quarter of last week's loss to rival Scott City, and Chaffee coach Charlie Vickery confirmed Thursday that an MRI revealed Morehead completely tore an ACL and will need surgery.
Morehead, who has given a verbal commitment to play at Austin Peay, has been a two-way starter for the Red Devils since his sophomore season after starting several games as a freshman. He was a Class 1 second-team all-state lineman his sophomore and junior seasons.
"We don't elect a captain, but he definitely was our team leader, no question about it," Vickery said.
Vickery said he plans on using two or three players to fill the void left by Morehead, including freshman Devon Foulk and junior Bradyn Swinford.
"The last two days we had two really good practices," Vickery said. "We'll just have to have someone step up. It's a huge loss for us, no question about that."
Morehead had not yet signed with Austin Peay, but Vickery said the Govs indicated they plan to honor the verbal commitment.
"He's a good player and has a high motor," Vickery said. "He just never has an off day. He worked hard in the offseason and never missed a workout. I was telling Austin Peay, he's the type kid that will work to get it back. He'll work his butt off to get through that."
Meanwhile, Chaffee's offensive problems continued with six points against Scott City. The Red Devils scored a season-high eight points in a Week 3 loss to Hayti and have 20 points on the year.
The Eagles had been averaging 42.25 points before being held to six points by Malden, ranked No. 8 in Class 2.
Last week: Jefferson 21, Crystal City 14; Lift For Life 6, St. Vincent 0
Last year: St. Vincent 40, Crystal City 24
Outlook: A young Indian squad is off to the school's first 0-5 start since 1991.
The teams have two common opponents. Both were thumped by defending Class 1 state champion Valle Catholic. However, Crystal City trimmed Kelly 20-18 with a last-minute TD pass in Week 2, while St. Vincent missed a chance for a last-minute TD in a 20-14 loss to the Hawks in Week 3. Crystal City, which also owns a 33-13 win over Principia, has lost its last two games.
Last week: Affton 49, Perryville 16; Park Hills 36, Potosi 3
Last year: Potosi 27, Perryville 0
Outlook: Perryville's season is mirroring its 2013 campaign, when the Pirates opened with back-to-back wins and finished 2-8.
The 2014 Pirates have a three-game losing streak after opening the season with wins against Sumner and St. Pius. They'll have a tough task in Potosi, which encountered its first loss last week against undefeated Park Hills Central, ranked No. 4 in Class 3. The Trojans' four wins include a 19-0 win over Fredericktown in Week 3; the Black Cats dealt a 33-6 loss to Perryville in Week 4.
Last week: Scott City 28, Chaffee 6; Portageville 34, Hayti 8
Last year: Portageville 33, Scott City 14
Outlook: Portageville has won the last four meetings between the schools.
Both teams own comfortable wins over Chaffee while both have been bulldozed by Malden. The Rams have won three of their last four games, with the lone loss to Malden. Scott City owns one win this year against a team with a winning record (East Prairie), while Portageville's three wins are all against team's with losing records.
Last week: Kelly 41, Fulton County (Ky.) 0; New Madrid County Central 72, Charleston 30
Last year: Did not play.
Outlook: Kelly has an opportunity for its first varsity winning streak in school history. The Hawks struck for a season-high 41 points in posting their first shutout and road victory last week against Fulton County, Kentucky. The Hawks went into that game averaging 11.25 points a game, and they'll again have a chance to beef up their offensive numbers on the road.
Charleston has not held an opponent to less than 44 points this season. The Bluejays surrendered a season-high 72 points in their loss to New Madrid last week and are giving up an average of 62.2 points. Charleston, coming off a season-high 30 points, averages 14 points a game on offense.
