High school baseball roundup: Notre Dame, Chaffee cruise in district tourney openers

Jesse Schott smashed a home run to lead top-seeded Notre Dame to a 17-0 victory over Doniphan in the Class 3 District 1 baseball quarterfinals Saturday.

Ross James earned the win on the mound.

Cody Heisserer tripled, while Chase Simmons and Blake Hagedorn both had a double for the Bulldogs (20-4).

Notre Dame broke open the game with 10 runs in the second inning.

Notre Dame advanced to face Dexter in Monday's semifinal. The Bearcats eliminated Perryville with a 5-3 win.

The other semifinal will feature Kennett vs. Ste. Genevieve, which ousted Scott City 5-1.

Class 2 District 3

Top-seeded Chaffee cruised to a 20-1 victory over Meadow Heights in a quarterfinal game.

Alex Crowe struck out seven to earn the win.

Jared Walker, Daniel Dooley and Alex Davie each had a triple for the Red Devils (22-3).

Chaffee will face fourth-seeded Jefferson in Monday's at 2 p.m. semifinal.

Jefferson reached the semifinal round by defeating Saxony Lutheran 10-0 in five innings.

Jon Winkler suffered the loss after allowing six earned runs on eight hits over 3 2/3 innings.

Winkler did help his own cause by going 3 for 3 at the plate.

Monday's other semifinal will feature Kelly, an 8-4 winner over Woodland, against second-seeded Valle Catholic, which beat St. Vincent 12-0. First pitch is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
