Here's an update - There's no news about Rodriguez

This is just like the media and society. They take a cute analogy or stimulating story and, after just one week, completely run it into the ground.

I'll admit I'm notorious for walking around the house and repeating a goofy phrase or joke over and over again.

But the "arms race" between the Red Sox and Yankees is getting old. It was a cute analogy for about a day. Now it's tiresome.

The average baseball fan couldn't care less what strategy the Yankees are using to counter the Red Sox. In fact, most of them don't even care if the best player in the game changes uniforms in the "cold war," either.

Let me be clear here: Of course I'm a Boston fan, and I want nothing more than Alex Rodriguez to come to the Red Sox. But even I (who's willing to wear the same underwear for two days to "help" the Red Sox win a playoff series) don't want a daily update on the saga -- especially if there's nothing to report.

Every media outlet that even has a sports section is talking about the "arms race." Here's one of the headlines that appeared in this very paper last week: "Rodriguez trade still remains a possibility."

Just let me know when it becomes a reality. Then I'll be excited.

Tuesday

I'll be content to listen to this one on the radio. Southeast men's basketball at Arkansas, 7 p.m.

Thursday

It's been exciting the last few times Poplar Bluff and Central have gotten together to play a little roundball. Adding to the excitement this time is the rumored attendance of a few prominent college hoops coaches. Roy Williams, coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels, is expected to be at the game scouting Tyler Hansbrough. Hansbrough is a hot recruit not only locally, but nationally. He has been nationally ranked as high as fifth among high school juniors by media outlets. He's a player. Central and Poplar Bluff in the Sikeston Tournament at 6 p.m.

Friday

Two teams in the SEMO Top 15 boys basketball poll -- No. 4 Dexter and No. 15 Jackson -- square off. Honestly, I know nothing of Dexter yet. But after this game we might all know who Dexter is. Dexter at Jackson, 7:30 p.m.

Notre Dame's boys basketball team is the talk of the school. Our old pal Micah Reutzel and his dad, Brett, bring the Fredericktown Black Cats to Cape Girardeau to play Notre Dame at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday

The last time these two teams played, the Blues were the real kings. The Blues scored a 4-1 victory over Los Angeles on vintage night. This one is Paige Sports Yearbooks night for the first 10,000 fans at 7 p.m.
