Hairston helps Orioles squeeze out Yanks

BALTIMORE -- Jerry Hairston drove in the tiebreaking run with a suicide squeeze in the seventh inning, and the Baltimore Orioles beat the New York Yankees 4-3 Tuesday night.

Marty Cordova had three hits and two RBIs for Baltimore, which beat Andy Pettitte (1-2). Alfonso Soriano and Derek Jeter hit solo homers for the Yankees.

Willis Roberts (4-2) won in relief, and Jorge Julio worked the ninth for his 16th save.

With the score tied at 3, Ramiro Mendoza came in to face Hairston, whose bunt toward first base score Brian Roberts.

Indians 4, Red Sox 2

BOSTON -- Jim Thome hit his 20th homer, and reliever Paul Shuey pitched into and out of a bases-loaded jam as Cleveland won.

Boston's Manny Ramirez went 1-for-5 in his first game after six weeks on the disabled list with a broken finger. He struck out with runners on first and third to end it.

Danys Baez (6-5) won, and Bob Wickman got his 18th save.

Blue Jays 20, Devil Rays 11

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Jose Cruz Jr. went 4-for-5 with a career-high six RBIs, and Carlos Delgado homered and drove in five runs as Toronto had its highest-scoring game in 24 years.

Vernon Wells, Felipe Lopez and Joe Lawrence also homered for the Blue Jays, who beat Baltimore 24-10 in 1978.

Wells, whose two-run double was the big blow in a four-run first inning, drove in four runs.

Reliever Pete Walker (3-0) got the win over Tampa Bay's Jorge Sosa (0-1).

Royals 8, Tigers 6

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Raul Ibanez matched his career high with four RBIs, helping the Royals rally from a four-run deficit in the first game involving two Dominican managers -- Detroit's Luis Pujols and Kansas City's Tony Pena.

Ibanez homered with Joe Randa aboard in the fifth off reliever Julio Santana (3-2) to break a 5-5 tie and make a winner of Jeff Suppan (6-6).

Kansas City's Mike Sweeney went 3-for-4 with a home run and two doubles to raise his batting average to .358, second in the AL.

White Sox 15, Twins 7

MINNEAPOLIS -- Magglio Ordonez drove in five runs, and Chicago overcame a subpar outing by ace Mark Buehrle with a season-high 23 hits.

Josh Paul had two RBIs for Chicago, which ended a four-game losing streak and had a season high in runs as the White Sox pounded Eric Milton (8-6).

Dustan Mohr drove in three runs and Cristian Guzman homered for Minnesota, which scored six runs in six innings off Buehrle (11-5).

Rangers 11, Angels 5

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Kevin Mench hit a three-run homer to cap Texas' biggest inning, and the Rangers won their eighth in a row.

Mench's homer capped a fifth inning in which the Rangers scored eight runs on just three hits. Mench led off the inning with a walk against Scott Schoeneweis (6-6), who then gave up a homer to Todd Greene that broke a 4-4 tie.

The Rangers' winning streak is their longest since they won nine straight from July 18-27, 1999. Rafael Palmeiro and rookie Ryan Ludwick added solo homers for Texas.

Ismael Valdes (5-6) pitched seven innings for just his second win in his last eight starts.

Noteworthy

RED SOX: Pitcher Frank Castillo made his scheduled start night after appealing a five-game suspension for making contact with an umpire. The right-hander was ejected in the seventh inning of Boston's 3-2 loss in San Diego last Wednesday for arguing a balk call made by three of the four umpires.

Also, Manny Ramirez was back in the lineup for Boston night after a six-week stint on the disabled list that saw the Red Sox fall from the best record in baseball to second place in the AL East.

WHITE SOX: The team recalled right-handed pitcher Matt Ginter from Triple-A Charlotte. They had optioned infielder Willie Harris to Charlotte after Monday night's loss to the Minnesota Twins.
