Gymnast Vanderpool honored by MIC

Southeast Missouri State's Taryn Vanderpool was named the Midwest Independent Conference gymnast of the week on Wednesday.

Vanderpool shared the all-around title and won uneven bars during Friday's' season opener at Lindenwood. Her 9.800 on bars was the top score earned by any gymnast in the meet while her 38.525 all-around score tied teammate Megan Fosnow for first place.

The Redhawks return to competition Friday, facing Centenary in their home opener at 6:30 p.m. at Houck Field House.

Baseball

Southeast junior outfielder Derek Gibson has been named a preseason first-team all-Ohio Valley Conference selection by College Sports Madness..

Gibson was a first-team all-OVC pick last year when he batted .338 with seven home runs and 38 RBIs. He ranked third in the OVC during conference play with 31 RBIs. His season was highlighted by a 29-game hitting streak.

The Redhawks open the season Feb. 15 at New Orleans.
