Gutierrez injured in Indians' winning run

CLEVELAND -- Ricky Gutierrez strained his left groin while scoring on rookie Chris Magruder's triple in the 10th inning, giving the Indians a 2-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles in Thursday's only scheduled major league game.

Gutierrez drew a one-out walk in the 10th off Willis Roberts (3-2). Magruder followed with a liner toward the right-field corner that bounced off the rubberized warning track.

As the ball eluded right fielder Gary Matthews Jr., Gutierrez was waved home and scored easily, but grabbed his upper leg after crossing home plate.

Gutierrez has a strained left groin, but doesn't think he'll have to go on the disabled list.

Cleveland's Chuck Finley moved past Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson into 23rd place on the career strikeout list, fanning eight in 6 2/3 innings to raise his total to 2,505 in 16 seasons.

Noteworthy

CARDINALS: Closer Jason Isringhausen will have his sore pitching elbow examined by team doctor George Paletta. Isringhausen hasn't pitched since June 4 and experienced some discomfort while warming up last weekend in Kansas City.

The team's initial diagnosis was elbow tendinitis. Cardinals officials won't speculate if Isringhausen may land on the disabled list.

INDIANS: The team placed Paul Shuey on the DL with a groin injury. Shuey has made 11 career trips to the DL, including at least one in the past six years.

MARINERS: Shortstop Carlos Guillen was arrested for investigation of drunken driving.

Guillen, 26, was stopped by police in suburban Clyde Hill for allegedly speeding. The police said he then refused to take a Breathalyzer test when he was taken to the police station.

Police alleged Guillen was driving 89 mph in a 60 mph zone in his 2002 Mercedes.

METS: Chris Chambliss, a former player and coach with the New York Yankees, was hired by the New York Mets as their batting coach.

YANKEES: There will be no suspension or fine for Roger Clemens for hitting Barry Bonds last Sunday, the league announced.
