"He didn't lose because he made a mistake, he just ran into a tough, tough kid," Central coach James Brake said. "We've got to tip our hat to him."

Central senior Trey Grovenor ran into an immovable force in the Class 3 heavyweight state championship match Saturday.

Grovenor scored first against University City's Demarco Kemp, but Kemp finished his undefeated season with a 3-2 victory over Grovenor at Mizzou Arena in Columbia, Mo.

"He didn't lose because he made a mistake, he just ran into a tough, tough kid," Central coach James Brake said. "We've got to tip our hat to him."

Grovenor faced Kemp in the Tigers' first meet of the season at Ft. Zumwalt North. Kemp pinned Grovenor in that match.

"I think it helped a lot because I knew what moves he liked to do," Grovenor said of the previous match against Kemp. "It helped me strategize what I wanted to do."

Grovenor jumped ahead 1-0 in the second period of Saturday's match. He didn't change his game plan after grabbing the lead.

"My strategy was to stay offensive and try to work my moves to score the whole time," Grovenor said. "I tried to make him wrestle my match instead of wrestling his."

But Kemp (50-0) scored a takedown with about 30 seconds left in the third period to take a 3-1 lead.

"Both were on their feet with about 30 seconds left and they were able to score a takedown on the edge," Brake said. "Then we did score one more point. We got away with about 5 seconds left, but not enough time left."

Kemp also beat Grovenor in the state meet last year. Kemp emerged with the win in triple overtime last year.

Grovenor reached the title match with a 2-1 overtime win against Raytown South's Donovan Gordon in the semifinals. He earned a 3-0 win in the quarterfinals after pinning his opening-round opponent.

"I thought he wrestled outstanding," Brake said. "He came out on fire and got a pin in his first match. He kept his momentum going and looked really good. He never really got in trouble. He was wrestling well."

Grovenor finished the season 44-8 and said he'll always remember his final high school match.

"I'm pretty happy," he said. "I see it as I came up short, but I was in the finals match. There are a lot of people who can't say that. I wrestled as hard as I could, so I was pretty happy with how I finished."

In Class 4, Jackson's Jordan Reisenbichler advanced to the semifinals at 112 with a 1-0 win over Mauricio Garcia of Blue Springs. But Reisenbichler was defeated by Bricker Dixon of Park Hills 16-1 in the quarters.

Reisenbichler put together another win to reach the third-place match, where he lost to Ft. Zumwalt West's Kyle Hussey 8-6. Reisenbichler finished fourth in the state with a 41-13 record.

"Jordan really had a great tournament," Jackson coach Steve Wachter said. "Even in his finals match that he lost, he still wrestled a great match with the kid from Ft. Zumwalt West."

Jackson's Ryan Marble also earned a fourth-place finish. He lost to St. Joseph Central's Joshua Phillips 5-3 in the 171 third-place match.

"He won three matches in a row to get to the medal round," Wachter said of Marble. "He won one in overtime then he also won one with 5 seconds left with a takedown. Ryan wrestled hard and he wrestled really well."

Marble finished the season 52-7.

The Indians' third wrestler to place was Levi Rayburn at 119. The junior finished fifth after beating Ritenour's Shawn Williams 3-2 in the fifth-place match.

"I know it doesn't sound like it being fifth in the finals, but those weight classes are so loaded with talent," Wachter said. "Taking fifth, we were really proud of him."

Rayburn finished the season 45-10.
