Glenzy was a former coach with Chaffee football team

Former Chaffee High School football coach Gary Glenzy died Sunday morning in the emergency room at Pinckneyville Community Hospital in Pinckneyville, Ill.

Glenzy was 63. The cause of death was not available.

Glenzy, born in Chaffee, Mo., was the coach at his alma mater for three seasons from 1967 to 1969. His 1969 team finished 8-2 and featured a pair of current coaches on its roster, Sikeston's Charlie Vickery and New Madrid County Central's Steve Rogers.

Glenzy moved to Pinckneyville in 1970 and coached football there for 21 years before he retired in 1990. He won two conference championships and led the Pinckneyville baseball team to a regional championship. He was elected to the Illinois High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 1990.

Glenzy was honored by the Southern Illinois Coaches Association with the Ameritus Coach Award in 2001. As an athlete Glenzy was an all-conference football player at Chaffee and graduated from Southeast Missouri State University.

His wife, Rosemary, is a teacher for the junior high school in Pinckneyville. Also among his survivors is his cousin, Terry Glenzy, the athletic director at Chaffee High School.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the St. Bruno Catholic Church in Pinckneyville. Visitation will be from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the church.
