All the local high school events reported Thursday to the Southeast Missourian.

A day after rapping out 15 hits in a season-opening win, the Central softball team played small ball to edge Portageville 1-0 on Thursday at the Central softball diamond.

Consecutive bunt singles by Maddie Daum and Sydney Tollison in the bottom of the sixth inning put runners on the corners for the Tigers. Kadie Orenstein followed with an infield groundout that scored Daum with the game's only run.

Maggie Groshong scattered four hits, walked three and struck out seven in going the distance for the Tigers (2-0). Orenstein had the game's only extra-base hit, a double in the first inning.

Mallorie Naintz went 2 for 3 with a triple and drove in three runs as the Indians made an early lead stand up at home.

Taylor Kirn had two hits and scored three runs for Jackson (1-1), while Taylor Bauknecht was 2 for 4 and scored twice. Kayla Keith, Melanie Dawkins and McKenzie Bartels each added two hits for the Indians, who led 9-1 after four innings.

Kelsie Meystedt (1-1) was the winning pitcher, allowing four runs on nine hits. She didn't walk a batter or register a strikeout.

Nikki Peters pitched a two-hit shutout as the Bulldogs won their season opener.

Peters (1-0) walked one and struck out seven in going the distance for Notre Dame. The Bulldogs scored once in the second on a wild pitch and again in the fourth on Tiffany Wood's run-scoring single.

A five-run sixth inning enabled Twin Rivers to rally for the road win.

Cheyenne Clayborn went 3 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs for Delta (1-1). Ciara Coomer, Abbi Brown and Meagan Parker each added two hits for the Bobcats.

Coomer (1-1) absorbed the loss in relief.

Camille Brewer led Notre Dame with a 92 as the Bulldogs dropped a dual meet to Valley View High School of Jonesboro, Ark., at Dalhousie Golf Club.

Jonesboro's Sarah Childers was meet medalist with an 8-over 80.

The Jackson girls squad endured a rough opener, dropping all nine matches in Kennett.
