PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- The Scott City High baseball team capitalized on a fine pitching performance from an unexpected source to gain a 10-7 comeback win over host Perryville Wednesday afternoon.

Jason Umfleet, a freshman in his first varsity action, came on in relief of starter Steven Posey to shut down Perryville.

Umfleet, entering the game with runners on second and third and no outs in the third inning, set the Pirates down with no further damage after they had put six runs on the board. He picked up the win, going five innings while allowing two hits, striking out seven and issuing one walk.

Scott City's offense came alive with four runs in the fifth inning and five in the sixth.

Scott City improved to 2-6 while Perryville fell to 5-6.

Ben Sample led Scott City's eight-hit attack with two hits and four runs batted in, including a huge bases loaded double in the fifth to drive home three. Charlie Lindberg also collected two hits.

Jon Miesner paced Perryville with three hits and five RBIs, while Colby Palisch chipped in with two hits.

Jackson 10, Dexter 0

JACKSON, Mo. -- Jason Brown pitched five brilliant innings and gave himself some rest as well as he ended the game in the fifth inning via the 10-run mercy rule with an RBI double.

Brown, on the mound, allowed only two hits while striking out four. He walked two and hit two batters. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Michael Birk added two hits for Jackson (5-7), while Dusty Roberts provided a solo home run.

"We had maybe one play we didn't make, otherwise it was a good game," Jackson coach Sam Sides said. "Jason had probably his best game."

Jackson's JV, behind the pitching of Josh Parham, beat Dexter 6-0.

Oran 13, Advance 1

ADVANCE, Mo. -- Oran improved to 7-1 with a six-inning victory.

Adam Friga was the winning pitcher. He struck out 11 in four innings, allowing just one hit while walking one.

Nathan Seyer had two of Oran's eight hits.

Adam Rainey suffered the loss. He went 3 1/3 innings and gave up eight runs, two earned, on four hits and three walks. He struck out six.

Rainey had his team's only run batted in.

GIRLS SOCCER

Perryville 1,

Cape Central 0

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- Brittany Weibrecht scored a goal with about nine minutes left in the game from an assist by Brooke Winkler as Perryville squeaked past Cape Central (7-3-3).

Amanda Nuyt recorded the shutout in goal for Perryville, which improved to 13-2-2.

"We didn't have one of our better games, but we pulled through in the end I guess," Perryville coach Brean LeMaster said.

St. Vincent 146,

Notre Dame 157

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- St. Vincent and Notre Dame both shot season-best scores Wednesday, with the Indians posting an eye-popping 146 at the par-35 Perryville Country Club.

Jon Paulus led St. Vincent, shooting a par round, followed by Craig Schumer and Wes Richardet at 36 and Andrew Prost at 39.

"We had a great day," said St. Vincent coach Tom Prost, whose team is 7-1 in dual matches. "We hadn't broken 150 this year, so this was really encouraging."

Nick Martin paced Notre Dame (7-3) with a 36, followed by Elliot Maschmann with 37, Ryan Hannan with 38 and Lucas Klein with 46. The Bulldogs dropped to 7-3.

"We were only two strokes off our school record," Notre Dame coach Chris Janet. "That's a great score for us and it was just a little bit better score for the Indians."

Central wins triangular

DEXTER, Mo. -- Cape Central edged Dexter in a triangular meet, scoring 164 to 165 for the host squad. New Madrid (195) brought up the rear.

The Tigers (8-3) were led by Todd Obergoenner's 39. He was followed by Nick Harter 40, Luke Oliver 42, Paul York 43 and Ty Gramling 43.

Dexter's Chad Gill tied with Obergoenner for medalist honors with a 39.

Jackson nabs triangular

STE. GENEVIEVE, Mo. -- Jackson won a tight tri-meet, scoring 164 to 166 for Ste. Genevieve and 167 for Valle.

The Indians (8-2) were led by medalist Matt Litzelfelner's 38. Other Jackson scores were Kyle Perry 40, Peyton Sims 41, Rhett Butler 45 and Nathan Brown 45.

Hillsboro 180,

Perryville 196

HILLSBORO, Mo. -- Perryville's Kellen Stark tied for medalist honors with a 42 but the Pirates stumbled overall.

Other scores for Perryville (5-5) were Justin Dreyer 46, Nicholas Erlacker 49 and Ryan Kutz 59.

SOFTBALL

Kelly 3, Poplar Bluff 1

BENTON, Mo. -- Natalie Lewer pitched a gem as Kelly (6-1) squeezed out an eight-inning victory.

Lewer allowed just one hit, with 10 strikeouts and no walks.

Advance 12, Oran 2

ADVANCE, Mo. -- Advance picked up a big win and handed Oran its first loss as the Lady Hornets romped in five innings. Both teams are 7-1.

Amber Bond was the winning pitcher, allowing three hits with five strikeouts and three walks.

Tracy McCabe had three of Advance's seven hits.
