~ Young picked up the pitching victory and also had two hits for Cape Girardeau.
The Cape Girardeau Ford and Sons American Legion baseball team continued their winning ways Wednesday night at Capaha Park, posting a five-inning 11-1 victory over visiting Plaza Express from Fulton County, Ky.
Cape Girardeau starting pitcher Lance Young, a recent Central High graduate, went the distance to record the win, giving up only three hits.
Young worked out of trouble in the third when he induced a pop-up to leave runners stranded on second and third.
The only run scored on Young came in the top of the fifth, when Plaza Express put its leadoff man on third base with no outs.
Young struck out five and walked one.
"Lance did a great job," Cape coach Dave Meyr said. "A lot of times, it's hard for a pitcher to stay focused in a game like this, but he hung in there and pitched a good game."
Cape Girardeau's offense got the job done as well in its home opener, scoring four runs in the first and adding three more in the third and fourth innings before scoring the final run in the fifth.
"We hit the ball well," Meyr said. "The intensity might not have been there, but overall I was pleased with the way we played."
Jeremy Brinkmeyer went 3-for-3 with four RBIs to lead Cape offensively. Blake Slattery had two triples, Ty Craft went 2-for-2 with a double, and Young chipped in two hits.
Cape improved to 4-0 on the season with the victory in game one of the scheduled doubleheader.
Game 2 was rained out.
