Ford and Sons drops finale in tourney

The Cape Girardeau Ford and Sons American Legion team faltered defensively Sunday during a 7-5 loss to Jonesboro (Ark.) to conclude its particapation in the Paragould (Ark.) Tournament.

Cape went 1-2 in the tournament and is also now 1-2 on the season.

Ford and Sons had three more hits than Jonesboro -- finishing with 10 -- but left 10 runners on base and also committed six errors, which led to only three of Jonesboro's seven runs being earned.

Scott Brueckner went 3-for-4 with a triple to lead Cape offensively. Jeremy Brinkmeyer was 2-for-3.

Cory Huskey was the losing pitcher, although all three runs he allowed were unearned. In three innings, Huskey gave up two hits.

Anthony Wulfers allowed four runs -- three earned -- in two innings, while Michael Taylor worked a scoreless inning.

Cape plays home for the first time today when unbeaten Jackson (5-0) visits Capaha Field for a 6 p.m. doubleheader that opens the District 14 schedule.

* House Springs defeated host Perryville 8-3 in American Legion baseball late Friday night.

BABE RUTH BASEBALL Jackson sweeps

The Jackson Sr. Babe Ruth team ran its record to 7-1 with two wins at Sikeston, 14-7 and 17-6, late Saturday.

Jackson collected 11 hits in the opener. Leading the way were Tommy Wood and Trevor Thompson with three hits each. Tyler Profilet added a three-run home run.

Kyle Brown picked up the pitching win. He is now 1-0 with one save on the year.

In the second game, Jackson collected 15 hits, led by Aaron Green with three. Thompson and Brad Eaton added two hits apiece. Sam Sander improved to 2-1 with the pitching victory.

Jackson will resume play Tuesday with a 6 p.m. home doubleheader against Charleston.
