Rain wasn't a problem
IT WAS not raining when the players were pulled off the field ("Rain assists Cape in 8-4 zone victory," Aug. 3). It didn't rain for about 20 more minutes. Then the rain only lasted about 20 minutes. It was the lightning that caused the longer delay, and in the groundskeepers' opinion the field could have been made playable.
So are they Indians?
I AM writing this in a state of great confusion. A day after you wrote a long article about how Southeast Missouri State University decided to drop the Indian mascot you titled an article "Indians picked to finish first" in reference to Southeast's preseason football selection. First, allow me to ask: Are they really dropping the name for good or is it just under deep consideration? The beauty in college sports is that mascots tend to represent a region's history and character. There is substantial evidence supporting that tribes did dwell in our region. So to argue David Wilson's point in this past week's column, though Southeast's recent athletic history may not have a most impressive tradition, the history and traditions of Cape Girardeau and the region of Southeast Missouri strongly involve the Indians, and the university represents this community and the region as a whole. So now I raise the qauestion: What will the next mascot be? Personally, I would stick to tradition. I would stick to the Southeast Missouri State Indians.
The mascot has not changed, nor has the university decided whether it will change its mascot. So, for the time being, the school's teams remain the Indians and Otahkians.
Cards still need pitchers
THIS PERTAINS to the Cardinals baseball team and how they keep talking about their pitching. It looks like the season is almost over, and they still don't have any good pitchers. We were just talking: Maybe if they ever trade for a good pitcher, they might get to the World Series, but they haven't won the World Series in 20 years.
