Move over Randy Johnson and make room for Curt Schilling on the Arizona Diamondbacks' disabled list. Schilling's broken right hand, diagnosed Tuesday, is just the latest in a numbing series of injuries for the two-time defending NL West champs.
Mets starter Pedro Astacio and reliever Scott Strickland will both likely have surgery in the next two weeks, ending the right-handers' seasons. Astacio went on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a torn labrum in his right shoulder. He will see Angels team physician Dr. Lewis Yocum on Monday and possibly have surgery the following day.
Dodgers pitcher Darren Dreifort, making a successful comeback following his second reconstructive elbow operation, was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a sprained ligament in his right knee. The Dodgers replaced Dreifort on the roster by recalling left-hander Victor Alvarez from Triple-A Las Vegas.
A Cook County judge is recommending six months at boot camp for the 16-year-old boy who rushed the field with his father and beat Royals base coach Tom Gamboa when the Royals played at Chicago last September. Markham Juvenile Court Judge Michael Stuttley considered a parole violation and a July 2002 juvenile delinquency petition in recommending the sentence Wednesday, said Tom Stanton, a spokesman for the Cook County state's attorney's office.

Rams veterans will be getting an early start to their summer break after it was determined the team violated league rules regarding offseason workouts, according to league sources. The Rams will lose their remaining week of their offseason program, scheduled for next week, because one of their players reported the team to the NFL Players Association for violations of the offseason rules. That led to an investigation by the NFLPA and the NFL Management Council, which resulted in the loss of the week of work.
