Briefly
Baseball
The Astros activated right-hander Roy Oswalt from the 15-day disabled list Saturday and sent reliever Brandon Puffer to Triple-A New Orleans.
Mets first baseman Mo Vaughn has probably played his last game. His agent, Jeff Moorad, told the New York Daily News that Mo will have arthroscopic surgery in 30-45 days to flush out the 10-12 bone spurs from his arthritic left knee and he'll miss the rest of the season. All six doctors he consulted with in recent weeks about his arthritic left knee recommended knee replacement surgery, which would end his career.
Athletics hitting coach Thad Bosley was fired after returning to Oakland for a meeting with general manager Billy Beane. Dave Hudgens was picked as the interim hitting coach -- and Hudgens is the one the A's reassigned to move Bosley from first-base coach to hitting coach after the 1999 season.
Diamondbacks ace Curt Schilling, hit twice on his right hand by comebackers on Friday night, does not expect to miss his next start. X-rays taken of Schilling's pitching hand after he left the game in the eighth inning against the Padres were negative.
Colleges
Oklahoma State University will not renew the contract for its head baseball coach. OSU Athletics Director Harry Birdwell said the university will not extend Tom Holliday's contract when it expires June 30.
Danny Guidry hit a go-ahead two-run single in the sixth inning to lead Central Missouri State to an 11-4 victory over Tampa in the Division II championship. Guidry led off the game with a homer and finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs for the Mules, who won their second D-II title and first since 1994. Stephen Downey went 5-for-5 with four singles and a double.
Football
The Bengals signed veteran free agent quarterback Shane Matthews to a one-year contract on Saturday. Financial terms of the deal were not released. Matthews, who was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week after his performance in Week 1, threw for 1,251 yards with 12 touchdown passes and six interceptions for Washington last season.
Golf
There's nothing like a couple of bogeys to get Annika Sorenstam fired up. Angry with herself after three-putt bogeys on consecutive holes, Sorenstam birdied the last five holes to take a two-stroke lead into the final round of the Kellogg-Keebler Classic. She finished with a 6-under 66, the second-best round of the day, giving her a two-day score of 16-under 128. Mhairi McKay had nine birdies on her way to a 64 and is at 130.
The cold wind was whipping so hard when Kenny Perry got to the first tee that he figured even par would be enough for him to keep the lead in the Memorial. As usual, he was better than that. Perry shot a 2-under 70. His lead was two shots over Lee Janzen. Tiger Woods, meanwhile, struggled. He had to play the final four holes in 2 under to shoot 76.
Tennis
More than 4 1/2 hours into his third five-set victory at the French Open, Albert Costa leaned over the net, head down, tongue hanging. The defending champion appeared to be peering into a well, searching for drops of energy. At the other end of Roland Garros, top-ranked Lleyton Hewitt screamed at himself, trying to get back into a groove as a big lead slipped away in his own marathon. A week ago, Costa's 10-year record didn't include a single comeback from a two-set deficit. Now he's done it twice: in the first round and against unseeded Nicolas Lapentti in the third, winning 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 Saturday. Hewitt, meanwhile, dropped the last six games to No. 28 Tommy Robredo 4-6, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3.
