Baseball

Yankees first baseman Nick Johnson will miss four to six weeks with a stress fracture in his right hand, the latest injury in his young career.

Expos right-hander Tony Armas Jr. will have surgery next week to repair slight tears in his rotator cuff and shoulder.

Basketball

Celtics center Tony Battie had surgery on his right knee for an injury that forced him to miss 11 games this season. Battie underwent surgery Thursday at New England Baptist Hospital to repair torn cartilage, the team said.

Colleges

Ed Pinckney was hired as an assistant coach at Villanova, returning to the school he helped lead to a surprising NCAA title in 1985. The 40-year-old Pinckney replaces Joe Jones, the new coach at Columbia.

Golf

Tiger Woods fell nine strokes behind leader Padraig Harrington after shooting a 1-under-par 71 in the second round of the Deutsche Bank Open.

Vijay Singh is back to getting attention for his play on the golf course instead of his comments about Annika Sorenstam. With his second straight 5-under 65, Singh took the second-round lead at the Byron Nelson Championship. He leads by one stroke over Tim Petrovic, who had a hole-in-one in his round of 66.

Hockey

The Stars waived forward Pierre Turgeon following a season in which he scored a career-low 12 goals. Turgeon, signed as a free agent in 2001, was moved to left wing this season because of the Stars' depth at center. He had 42 points in 65 games.

Obituary

Mark McCormack, the sports marketing pioneer whose company IMG represents Tiger Woods, Derek Jeter and numerous other stars, died Friday at age 72. McCormack died in a New York hospital four months after a heart attack left him in a coma, the Cleveland-based company said.

Tennis

Jennifer Capriati was eliminated from the Italian Open, losing to Amelie Mauresmo 6-3, 7-6 (10) in the quarterfinals. Mauresmo will next play defending champion Serena Williams, who defeated Conchita Martinez 7-5, 6-2 in this $1.3 million clay-court tuneup for this month's French Open.
