Florida left-hander Mark Redman became the first player to win in salary arbitration this year, getting a raise from $300,000 to $2.15 million on Tuesday instead of the $1.8 million the Marlins had wanted.

Basketball

Orlando Magic center Shawn Kemp was suspended without pay by the NBA on Tuesday, the third time he has violated the terms of the league's anti-drug policy.

Miami Heat coach Pat Riley was fined $20,000 by the NBA on Tuesday for criticizing officials following a loss to Portland last week.

Colleges

University of Missouri junior guard Ricky Clemons is to enter a plea Feb. 18 to a felony charge of choking a woman and refusing to allow her to leave his apartment last month. As Clemons watched Tuesday, his attorney Wally Bley waived a preliminary hearing in Boone County Associate Circuit Court, which transfers the case to circuit court.

Tennessee State athletic director Teresa Phillips will make history Thursday night as the first woman to coach a men's Division I college basketball team. The decision came after 19 players were ejected following a brawl between Tennessee State and Eastern Kentucky on Monday night. Phillips suspended interim coach Hosea Lewis for one game Tuesday and announced she would coach the Tigers when they play at Austin Peay in Clarksville, Tenn.

Football

The Rams, unable to reach a long-term contract with Orlando Pace, placed the franchise player tag on the Pro Bowl offensive tackle. Pace was the first overall pick of the 1997 draft and has completed a six-year, $18 million contract. The franchise tag means the Rams must offer Pace a one-year contract equal to the average of the five highest-paid offensive tackles in the NFL last season, in this case $5.73 million.

High schools

Fort Worth Dunbar coach Robert Hughes became the nation's winningest high school basketball coach with his 1,275th victory Tuesday night. Australian Open champion Andre Agassi played Michael Chang late in another first-round match.

Kim Clijsters beat Myriam Casanova 6-3, 6-2 Tuesday but sister Elke Clijsters failed to make it a family double before a home crowd, losing to Patty Schnyder 6-2, 6-3 at the Diamond Games.
