The NCAA banned one player and suspended 13 who brawled after a game at Western Illinois, including some who will miss Western Kentucky's Division I-AA semifinal playoff Saturday. The Dec. 7 fight followed Western Kentucky's 31-28 playoff victory over Western Illinois on a last-minute field goal.

Maryland's E.J. Henderson won the Butkus Award as the nation's top linebacker.

Grand Valley State quarterback Curt Anes won the Harlon Hill Trophy on Friday as the best player in Division II.

Hockey

Pavel Bure will have surgery on both knees Monday, to repair some damage and determine whether he can play again this season. Bure hurt his left knee Dec. 6 when he banged into Buffalo's Curtis Brown. The original diagnosis was that Bure tore cartilage and sprained the medial collateral ligament.

Soccer

Adolfo Gregorio scored the go-ahead goal on a penalty kick in the 81st minute to lead UCLA into the NCAA championship game with a 2-1 victory over Maryland on Friday. The Bruins (17-3-3) will take on the winner of Friday night's Creighton-Stanford match in Sunday's title game.

O.J. had the right idea about courses

Maybe O.J. was right -- a golf course is a good place to look for lawbreakers.

Darren Muarry, who played in a PGA Senior Tour event on a sponsor's exemption 18 months ago, was arrested in Atlanta on Tuesday, the Journal-Constitution reported. Turns out Muarry was actually Robert "Fast Bobby" Atwater, who has been on the lam for 10 years to avoid a 10-years-to-life prison term after pleading guilty to federal drug charges.

"This is an old case," said U.S. District Judge J. Owen Forrester, when Fast Bobby made his belated court appearance. "Where's he been?"

"Mr. Atwater's been playing a little golf on the Senior PGA Tour," replied Assistant U.S. Attorney William Thomas, who provided news clippings of Atwater's Senior Tour appearance as Exhibit A.

And when the federal judge gets done with Fast Bobby, the PGA might be next in line. Turns out he was 49 -- one year too young -- when he made his Senior Tour debut.

Richard Allen, Fast Bobby's defense attorney, said he couldn't offer much detail about his client's years on the lam, except "(he) said he beat Tiger Woods."
