Tom Glavine received his long-awaited offer from the New York Mets on Friday, a three-year deal worth about $31 million.

The Philadelphia Phillies also have made a three-year offer to the 36-year-old left-hander, a contract worth between $27 million and $30 million.

Atlanta, Glavine's only team since he was drafted in 1984, have offered only a one-year deal for about $9 million.

Barry Bonds didn't have to hit a home run to this time to lead major league all-stars to victory.

Bonds doubled in a run with a fourth-inning drive off the left-field wall to lead the major leaguers over their Japanese counterparts 4-0 Friday.

"I didn't get it all but just enough to do some damage," said Bonds, who had homered five times in the previous five games of the eight-game tour.

Before the game, Bonds, beat Japanese free agent Hideki Matsui 8-5 in a home run contest in which each had 20 swings. Matsui went 0-for-2 with a walk in the game, dropping to 3-for-19 in the series. Yankees officials, who are expected to court him, arrived in Japan on Friday.

A federal appeals court on Friday threw out a jury's $2 million award in a sex discrimination lawsuit filed by former Duke place-kicker Heather Sue Mercer.

A three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously ruled that punitive damages are not available in private actions brought to enforce Title IX, the law that bars sex discrimination in education programs that receive federal funds.

Mercer was cut from the team before the 1996 season.
