Briefly
Baseball
Ken Griffey Jr. dislocated his right shoulder while diving for a fly ball Saturday, the second year in a row that the Cincinnati Reds outfielder was hurt in the season's first week. He left the game immediately and had the shoulder popped back into place by team physician Dr. Timothy Kremchek. Griffey was taken to a hospital for tests to see how much damage was done. There was no immediate estimate on how long he'll be sidelined.

A third basketball staff member at Missouri has been disciplined this year, this time after reporting he failed to turn in two players who used coaches' phones to make $452 in calls. The university suspended director of basketball operations Lee Rashman for four weeks without pay starting April 23 and has frozen his salary until September 2004, according to a letter Missouri sent to the NCAA in February. The action against Rashman follows discipline issued to Tigers coach Quin Snyder and assistant coach Lane Odom two months ago for violating NCAA rules on calling recruits.
Dayton coach Oliver Purnell has accepted an offer to coach Clemson, Flyers athletic director Ted Kissell said. Kissell said he talked to Purnell on the telephone and parted on good terms.
Golf
Lee Janzen surged into the lead in the third round of the BellSouth Classic, shooting a 5-under 31 on the final nine holes for a two-stroke advantage over Bob Tway. Janzen, who hasn't won in five years, finished with a 5-under 67 on the rain-softened TPC at Sugarloaf, which had played hard and fast in the opening two rounds. He had a 13-under 203 total. Heavy rain caused a delay of about an hour in the morning before the leaders teed off, and the weather left the course vulnerable.
Motorsports
Dale Earnhardt Jr. had just enough gas to wiggle across the finish line and win the Busch Series race at Talladega Superspeedway. A caution with two laps to go allowed him to slow enough to conserve fuel by pulling down on the apron and moving his car back and forth to move the gas around. That let him make it across the finish line to go 2-for-2 in Busch Series events this year.
Kurt Busch won his first International Race of Champions Series race in only his second try. Busch got the jump on a late restart and pulled away.
Rubens Barrichello won the pole for the Brazilian Grand Prix. The Ferrari driver turned the fast lap of 1 minute, 13.807 seconds on the 2.671-mile Interlagos circuit.
Drag racer Phil Burghard was killed in a crash at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Ill., near St. Louis after losing control of his car in an NHRA competition. The 33-year-old driver from Columbus, Ohio, crashed his Corvette during his second qualifying run for the Spring Sportsman Challenge XI.

Sara Wells of Edina, Minn., won the U.S. Women's Marathon Championship. Wells, 24, won in 2:35:36 on a criterion course in Forest Park.
Swimming
Jenny Thompson won her 26th national title with a victory in the 50-meter freestyle at the U.S. Spring National Swimming Championships. Thompson, 30, set a personal record of 25.02 seconds in winning her only event of the meet.
Tennis
Argentina upset defending champion Russia in the Davis Cup quarterfinals, while Australia and Spain also advanced. Switzerland led France 2-1 in their best-of-five series.
Second-seeded Rita Grande beat Antonella Serra Zanetti 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 to win the Grand Prix de SAR for her third WTA Tour title.
Monica Seles withdrew from this week's Family Circle Cup because of a stress fracture in her left foot.
