Baseball
Atlanta Braves pitcher Greg Maddux, a four-time Cy Young Award winner, asked for $16 million in arbitration, while the Braves countered with an offer of $13.5 million. The cost-cutting Braves want to keep Maddux's salary in line with the $13.1 million he made last season. The $2.5 million gap is the largest between any team and player.
Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith said Saturday that Pete Rose should admit wrongdoing before he's voted into the Hall. Commissioner Bud Selig plans to schedule a meeting with the 60 living Hall of Famers perhaps next month to discuss whether Rose should be allowed back into the game following his ban for gambling.
Basketball
Trail Blazers forward Rasheed Wallace was suspended for seven games without pay for confronting and threatening a referee outside the Rose Garden in Portland.
The Orlando Magic placed Grant Hill on the injured list because of chronic pain in his surgically repaired left ankle, and there was no timetable for his return.
Colleges
Notre Dame's Shane Walton returned a fourth-quarter interception 99 yards for a touchdown as the North won the Senior Bowl 17-0. Walton outshined some of college football's biggest offensive names, picking off Texas star Chris Simms' pass at the goal line and racing untouched down the sideline with 9:13 left. It was the longest return in Senior Bowl history, topping Fred Weary's 97-yarder in 1998.
A fourth Yale University student died from injuries suffered Friday when an SUV packed with nine friends hit a tractor-trailer on a snowy interstate. Most of the victims were members of Yale's football and baseball teams, including two who remained hospitalized in critical condition. Nicholas Grass, 19, of Holyoke, Mass., had helped lead the baseball team to the regional finals as a pitcher in 2001. Yale athletic director Tom Beckett announced his death during an afternoon women's basketball game.
Kentucky coach Rich Brooks has hired his former boss, Steve Ortmayer, as assistant coach and the coach of special teams and tight ends. Ortmayer, a former director of football operations for the Rams, is the seventh assistant hired by Brooks.
Darnell Archey of Butler missed a foul shot, ending his NCAA Division I record of 85 consecutive free throws. The miss came with 3:42 left in the second half against Youngstown State. Until then he had made every free throw since Feb. 8, 2001, a span of 56 games.
Golf
Aaron Baddeley quickly built a five-stroke lead over a collection of world-class players and finished with a 5-under 65 to keep his distance over Ernie Els to win the Sony Open. Baddeley, who won back-to-back Australian Open titles as a teenager, kept his cool when his swing deserted him down the stretch, making tough par saves on the 15th and 16th holes as the Big Easy was making a run. Baddeley was at 15-under 195 and was two strokes clear of Els, who had a 66.
Lightning suspended play in the third round of the Dunhill Championship, with Wales' Bradley Dredge and South Africa's Bradford Vaughan sharing the lead.
Australia's Chris Downes eagled the 17th hole for a 3-under 69 and a two-stroke lead after the third round of the New Zealand Open.
Former Clemson player Charles Warren III won the Panama Open, closing with a 1-under 71 for a one-stroke victory over fellow American Ken Duke.
Skating
Michelle Kwan reasserted herself with the style and perfection that has marked her illustrious career, winning her sixth straight U.S. Figure Skating Championships title and seventh overall. She received a 6.0 for artistry, her 28th perfect mark at nationals, along with six 5.9s. Her program, to "Aranjuez," was spotless, including six triple jumps that were so smooth they seemed automatic.
Skiing
Teenager Travis Cabral laid down a nearly flawless final run despite zero-degree weather, winning his second World Cup moguls event of the season and edging Olympic champion Janne Lahtela by nearly a full point. Aiko Uemura won the women's event for her first World Cup victory, edging Sandra Laoura by one-hundredth of a point.
