Boxing
Boxer Johnny Tapia was sent home from the hospital Monday, two days after collapsing at home with what had been described as a head injury. Tapia, 35, had been had been admitted to University Medical Center in critical condition early Saturday and spent the weekend on life support. Dr. Joaquim Tavares said that tests found no damage to Tapia's brain or heart.
Colleges
Texas football coach Mack Brown introduced new coaches Monday:Mike Haywood, coach and assistant special teams coordinator; Bruce Chambers, tight ends coach; and Mac McWhorter, offensive line coach.
Colorado running back Marcus Houston was released from his scholarship to talk with Colorado State University about a possible transfer, CU officials said.
Nebraska football coach Frank Solich announced the hirings of four new assistants:Barney Cotton as the Cornhuskers' play caller; Tim Albin as passing game coordinator and running backs coach; Scott Downing, as recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach; and Marvin Sanders as new secondary coach.
Kentucky hired former Utah coach Ron McBride as an assistant coach in charge of linebackers.
Football
Wide receiver Eddie Kennison signed a six-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. The team did not disclose terms of the contract.
Hockey
The Buffalo Sabres filed for bankruptcy protection, becoming the second NHL team in a week to seek relief from creditors. Commissioner Gary Bettman said the Chapter 11 filing is a step toward resolving the problems that put the Sabres under the league's control in June.
The Atlanta Thrashers called a news conference for today amid speculation they will hire Bob Hartley as their coach. Hartley was fired less than a month ago by the Colorado Avalanche.
Motorsports
NASCAR's first minority-owned Winston Cup team will carry sponsorship of the Army National Guard with Todd Bodine as its driver under a deal reached Monday.
Obituary
Paul Pender, a former middleweight champion who twice beat an aging Sugar Ray Robinson in 1960, died at 72 Sunday at the Veterans Administration hospital in Bedford.
Olympics
Lloyd Ward will keep his job as head of the U.S. Olympic Committee despite a finding that his attempt to steer business to a company with ties to his brother "created the appearance of a conflict of interest," according to the USOC ethics committee. There was no vote on whether Ward should keep his job, and USOC vice president Bill Stapleton said the USOC now considers the matter closed.

Woods wins cold Bass Busters tournament
Mike Woods of Jackson won Saturday in the Bass Busters fishing tournament held at Lake of Egypt.
Woods focused efforts on rock-bluff structure in the Clifty Creek area. He slowly worked a quarter-ounce jig with a Zoom Tiny Chuck in 15 feet of water to catch his sluggish fish. Woods also won Big Bass Honors for his 3-pound, 8-ounce bass that he caught on the same jig combination.
Brad Noel of Jackson finished second. He found his fish on main lake outside weed lines about 12 feet deep. He caught his fish using a Southern Pro tube jig.
Saturday's conditions were cold with a water temperature between 33 and 42 degrees with an air temperature between 22 and 27 degrees. It was sunny with winds out of the north at 5 to 10 mph.
