Baseball

Left-hander Mark Redman joined the Florida Marlins from the Detroit Tigers in a five-player trade Saturday. The Marlins sent right-hander Gary Knotts and minor league left-handers Nate Robertson and Rob Henkel to the Tigers for Redman and minor league right-hander Jason Fuell.

Basketball

The Indiana Pacers have hired former NBA player Chuck Person as a scout. Person, the fourth overall pick by Indiana in the 1986 draft, was the NBA rookie of the year that season and played six years with the Pacers before he was traded to Minnesota in 1992.

Colleges

After interviewing for the job, it now appears Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz is the leading candidate for the Jacksonville Jaguars' coaching vacancy. Dennis Green withdrew from consideration, and Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops declined to interview for the Jags' coaching job.

Nebraska coach Frank Solich has dismissed offensive line coach Milt Tenopir, according to newspaper reports. Citing anonymous sources close to the team, the World-Herald said former New Mexico State offensive coordinator Barney Cotton will serve as offensive coordinator and the line coach. Solich also reportedly hired Marvin Sanders as the defensive secondary coach. Sanders turned down a position with the Rams.

Miami's Ken Dorsey threw for 192 yards and led a scoring drive in the East's 20-17 victory in the East-West Shrine Classic. West Virginia's Avon Cobourne ran for two touchdowns, and Donald Lee of Mississippi State caught four passes for 122 yards and the go-ahead score for the East.

Football

Andy Reid didn't flinch when his star quarterback was injured in November. And when the backup got hurt the next week, the Philadelphia Eagles' coach just turned to the third-stringer. The Eagles kept on winning, and Reid earned The Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year award. Reid easily beat out Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher, who got six votes. New York Jets coach Herman Edwards received three, while Baltimore's Brian Billick got two. Oakland's Bill Callahan and the New York Giants' Jim Fassel each got one.

Hockey

Mario Lemieux, the NHL's leading scorer with 68 points, was picked by fans to be the East's starting center. He will be joined on the forward line by former Pittsburgh Penguins teammate Jagr and current teammate Alexei Kovalev. Nikolai Khabibulin, who helped the surprising Tampa Bay Lightning to the top of Southeast Division, will start in goal for the East. Brian Leetch of the New York Rangers (who's injured and probably won't play) and Sandis Ozolinsh of the host Florida Panthers received the most votes among Eastern defensemen in balloting. Detroit defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom was the top overall vote-getter for the second straight year with 164,568. He will man the Western blue line with Colorado's Rob Blake.

Canadian Olympic star Hayley Wickenheiser became the first woman to record a point in a men's pro hockey game, assisting on a goal in the Finnish League.

Tennis

Andre Agassi warmed for his bid for a third Australian Open championship in four years cruising past Sebastien Grosjean to win the Kooyong Classic. Agassi won 6-2, 6-3.

Lee Hyung-taik became the first South Korean winner in ATP Tour history, beating Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero 4-6, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4) in the Adidas International.

American Meghann Shaughnessy won her third WTA tournament title with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Francesca Schiavone in the Canberra Classic final.
